Einstürzende Neubauten guitarist Jochen Arbeit announces solo album 'Animal Makes Sounds', shares first track

Einstürzende Neubauten guitarist Jochen Arbeit announces the forthcoming solo album Tier Macht Toene (in English: Animal Makes Sounds), and shares the first single today. The album was made with homemade instruments and others built by Sonic Youth guitar builder Yuri Landman. Arbeit is joined on the album by Sonja Kosche. Hear and share the track "Trauma" via Bandcamp HERE.

About the album, Arbeit writes:

"A long while ago one day in forced Isolation, detached from time and space, something broke free that was asleep before. Reduced to the minimum vital functions of life a Tier awoke from which all Schmerz and Lust broke free, in which old Trauma were hidden inside way too long. It spoke in Toene the stories it had to tell of loneliness but also from interactions that led to reactions that not always were agreed upon, rarely harmonic, but that found themselves in a We with special value.

"Old images broke free like a suppressed madness from a thicket and showed an exhaustion but also a force and strength that was vividly perceptible.

"How can one describe what is not describable when two meet. The one who was inside the Berlin Music Scene for decades with knowledge that seemed obvious and the other who made music a long time ago but lost herself for decades and did not trust to express herself from fear what could come up with it and emerge. It stays hard to describe.

"Nothing was planned or predictable. The forced isolation because of the pandemic gave urgently needed time to develop something special and precious. The music expresses emotions that were hidden in the dark and finally broke free and told not only from old despair and not overcome trauma but also brought strength, satisfaction, peace and calm that you can try to feel inside the screeching-oppressive and nearly screaming tones.

"When we could we sat down to generate sound with self made instruments, developed a dialog that words could not tell. This was finally a motor which kept us alive, a dynamic that functions in the moment, spontaneously without thinking."

Tier Macht Toene will be available for download and streaming on September 23rd via Dymaxion Groove Records. Pre-orders are available HERE

Culpepper (ex-Kill Rock Stars, GSL) turn pain & disaster into beautiful music, hear new single from forthcoming debut

Portland, OR band Culpepper share a new single from their forthcoming full length debut via Psychedelic Baby Magazine. Hear and share "Plague Champagne" HERE. Direct Bandcamp. Pre-order/pre-save Linktree.

You could be led to believe that life is nothing more than an endurance test to see how much pain we can handle before the brain and heart just give in.

Certainly, we’ve all endured a wealth of pain in recent years. Culpepper songwriter and singer/guitarist/keyboardist Paul Leslie Culp (formerly of Kill Rock Stars artists Shaky Hands) perhaps more so than others, but he’s turned it into beautiful and heart-wrenching music. And into something new.

The recently launched Portland, OR quartet Culpepper features Culp with his son Max on drums, along with bassist Joel Wasko and former Starlite Desperation guitarist Dana Lacono. Their sound is a psychedelic, indie-rock storytelling with a flair for the dramatic. The band’s 8-song debut Superreactor is reminiscent of the saturated romanticism of Echo & The Bunnymen with the evocative, world-weary lyrics of Lee Hazlewood or Bill Callahan, and hazy psych-perimentation of Dandy Warhols and Spoon. The road to Superreactor wasn’t easy.

Superreactor is a pandemic baby,” Culp says. “Before that we were working on a specific set of songs, hoping they would be the backbone of our first album, when a series of disasters completely derailed it. My marriage of 20+ years ended, completely obliterating my home and upending my family. Then I lost several loved ones, including my dad. Max and I were on the way back from his funeral when they started talking about a potential lockdown. Then, isolated in my new tiny apartment I wrote a whole new batch of songs, which continued over the following couple of years. A lot happened in that time. Fires. Tear gas. Illness. Love. At one point I ended up in the hospital and had to take a 6-month break. The album is kind of an emotional/psychic map of that period.”

The album opens with the glimmering Morricone style tremolo guitar over pensive acoustic strums of “Big Bang” where soaring melodies set the stage for the song’s — and the album’s as a whole — dramatic tone. The title track takes a more fictitious approach to its subject matter, describing a power plant meltdown rendering the apocalypse, as Culp sings, “screeching of metal as I tore through the guardrail and away from the Earth/ I remember the words: Floor your heart to the end.” Elsewhere, “Plague Champagne” starts with a shimmering Hammond organ and slowly builds a lullabye melody reminiscent of Spiritualized as arpeggiated acoustic guitar notes fade in beneath the now chirping tremolo of the organ as Culp softly sings,” where are you going my bouncy little spoon? Angel hair and gummy bears and slowly healing wounds.” The album closes with the anthemic “Coming Awake,” which bursts with a guarded optimism reminiscent of David Bowie’s “Heroes” as distant drums crash and boom, a walking bass line sets the song’s veering course and Culp succinctly caps the album with the hopeful aphorism, “the more it hurts, man, the better it tastes.”

Superreactor was recorded and mixed by Paul Leslie Culp and Dana Lacono at The Day Theater in Portland, OR. The album will be available for download and streaming August 26th, 2022, with LPs due in Fall 2022.

The Schizophonics share new single "Under The Moonlight" from forthcoming album, full US tour September-November

"The wildest band in America." -- Spotify For Artists

"Makers of high octane, soulful garage punk." -- Brooklyn Vegan

"The explosive live act proudly evokes the high energy rock’n’roll of The MC5, merged with the aggressive rhythms of 60s Memphis soul underground for a relentless blast of fun." -- Big Takeover

“The kind of Rock rawkus that makes me shake my ass like I’m possessed by the spirit of MC5 and Little Richard at the same time. This band’s songs don’t just exist to be heard but to be felt deep down in your soul!” — CvltNation

San Diego trio The Schizophonics share a new single from their forthcoming fourth album today via CvltNation. Hear and share "Under The Moonlight" HERE. (Direct YouTube.)

The band recently launched the video for "Won Your Love", a recent live show favorite, available to watch and share via YouTube. The band previously issued the lead single "Desert Girl" via YouTube, Spotify and all other DSPs.

The band just recently wrapped up an extensive tour of Europe, and will be very busy for the next year with tour dates around the world. Extensive North American dates kick off in September. Please see current dates below.

Over the last few years, The Schizophonics have built up a formidable reputation around the world as an explosive live act. Tapping into the same unstoppable combination of rock 'n' roll energy and showmanship that fueled The MC5 in the heyday of the Grande Ballroom, their wild live show is heavily influenced by artists like James Brown, Iggy Pop, Jimi Hendrix, Little Richard, and The Sonics

Singer/guitarist Pat Beers and drummer Lety Beers formed the band in San Diego in 2009 and have worked tirelessly since then, playing hundreds of shows around the globe. In 2013 they were recruited as the backing/opening band for El Vez, which helped the band make a name for itself in Europe. Since then, they've played in numerous countries, and supported tours by like-minded acts like Rocket From The Crypt, Little Barrie, The Woggles and have opened for the Damned, DEVO, The Hives and Cage The Elephant. Shindig Magazine described their live show "Like watching some insane hybrid of WAYNE KRAMER, JAMES BROWN, and the Tasmanian Devil.”

The band is more than just a live act; they're also committed to writing great memorable songs. Their new album Hoof It on Pig Baby Records due in Fall 2022 was recorded by Dean Reis at Singing Serpent studio (Plosivs, RFTC) and mixed by Steve Kaye at Sun King Studios.

Hoof It will be available on LP, CD and download on September 2nd, 2022 via Pig Baby Records. Pre-orders are available HERE.

Pink Frost shares new single "Two Faces" from forthcoming album

"Crunchy alt rock and just a bit of shoegaze." -- Brooklyn Vegan

"Off-kilter, yearning rock music that strives for a populism that's considered a bit declassé by most of their peers and, as such, badly missed." -- Pitchfork

Chicago band Pink Frost share a new track from their first new album in 5 years today via New Noise Magazine. Hear and share "Two Faces" HERE. (Direct Bandcamp.) Pre-order/pre-save album Linktree.

Brooklyn Vegan recently premiered the video for album title track "Until The Summer Comes" HERE. (Direct YouTube.)

“It was a new torture, the waiting,” says Pink Frost vocalist/guitarist Adam Lukas.

When life suddenly froze for all of us, it wasn’t the downtime that was unbearable, it was the growing uncertainty as time dragged on that all of our loose threads would ever be connected.

The Chicago band had just completed recording their fourth album — splitting the studio time with sister band Touched By Ghoul (whose 2020 Cancel The World album title proved prophetic) — when plans to reconvene in France with longtime engineer Gregoire Yeche to mix in April 2020 became impossible.

When Gregoire eventually returned to Chicago in 2021, life in limbo seemed the new normal. Yet, the band felt somehow liberated. “We were like ‘F**k it, let's make our dream record,’” Lukas says. “We went in depth in a way we never have before. There are no compromises on this album. No cringeworthy oversights. We almost lost our minds doing it, but I'm happy we did.”

Indeed, the 9-song album is a feast of hooks and subtle transformations that shows both a slight return to the band’s previous indie-punk take on Smashing Pumpkins style oversized alt-rock, and their ever-growing palette of shoegaze, drone and anthemic rock. There’s even an almost peak NIN, Wax Trax industrial vibe to some tracks that underscores how the band continues to wield new ideas.

“We lost (guitarist) Paige Sandlin during the pandemic,” Lukas says. “But gained Angela from Touched By Ghoul, who now plays guitar and contributed some vocals on the LP, and brings a whole new excitement to the live show.”

Until The Summer Comes was recorded in Chicago at Steve Albini’s legendary Electrical Audio with longtime engineer Gregoire Yeche, just as the band has done on New Minds (2017), Sundowning (2013) and the Traitors EP (2014). “Electrical Audio is almost like another member of the band at this point,” Lukas says. “There is a purity to their method that captures the essence of the performance and preserves it in this magical 3-D way.”

The album opens with the title track’s thumping toms in a marching rhythm, soon joined by buzzing fuzz guitars before the whole song erupts in a huge chorus with chunky guitars reminiscent of peak Downward Spiral era NIN. “Two Faces” is an explosive diatribe driven home by bassist Alex Shumard’s lunging 4-string. “On A Clear Day (You Can See The End of The World)” sets a Beatles-esque acoustic guitar led melody atop psychedelic haze and rollicking drums. “Halo” serves up a lush shoegaze ballad in which drummer Nate Furstenau nods to My Bloody Valentine’s hybrid of drum machines and live drums for powerful effect. “Feed The Hungry Bee” closes the album with a repetitively building tension that leads into a dramatic finish that’s certain to be a live favorite.

Pink Frost’s previous albums received an onslaught of praise from such revered outlets as Pitchfork, SPIN, Noisey, Brooklyn Vegan, Magnet Magazine and Chicago Reader, as well as song placements in a feature film ("The Lookalike"), TV's Shameless, The Rookie, The Vampire Diaries, CSI: Miami and more. In December 2015, Pink Frost released a completely remixed, rethought and remastered version of their debut album Gargoyle Days, originally issued under the band’s former name Apteka

Until The Summer Comes will be available on LP, CD and download on September 16th, 2022 via Under Road Records. Pre-orders are available HERE.

DRECKIG fuse Latin rhythms/Krautrock/retro Electronic on forthcoming album, hear single "La Ballena" via Spill Magazine

Portland, OR duo Dreckig share a new single from their forthcoming album Digital Exposure today via The Spill Magazine. Hear and share "La Ballena" HERE. (Direct Bandcamp.)

Growing up in México and Germany, Papi Fimbres and Shana Lindbeck’s destiny led them to meet in Portland, OR. Wanting to honor their heritages in a new and collaborative way, they set out to form Dreckig, which means dirty in German.

Both deeply influenced by Cumbia’s melodious rhythms and German electronic compositions, they have created their own unique sound within that realm. Using all vintage drum machines and synthesizers, these elements are combined & envisioned in the studio, then brought to the stage in a mystical, dance club frenzy.

For Dreckig’s third album, Papi and Shana once again collaborated with Pinewave Studio’s Johann Wagner. Utilizing the studio’s impressive array of vintage drum machines, synthesizers and modulars, their favorites being the Roland 808, DMX & Moog Voyager, they created Digital Exposure. Continuing with the tradition of singing in Spanish, German and English, the album touches on topics of social constructs — such as “Own Your Shadow” and its call to look deep into one’s existence, on environmental impacts — such as “La Ballena,”a love song for our deep blue ocean, on embracing everyday life — such as “La Mita,” telling the story of an adventurous trip to México’s stunning coast. The flute, Dreckig’s third and sometimes only vocalist, adds a focused perspective to their unique sound and rounds out the album in its truest form. This is Dreckig’s first time collaborating with San Francisco’s Broken Clover Records to release the album on vinyl and all music platforms.

Digital Exposure will be available on LP, CD and download on August 12th, 2022 via Broken Clover Records. Pre-orders are available HERE.
