Shooting Guns (Netflix hit 'WolfCop' soundtrack, Juno Prize noms) premiere first track from forthcoming album 'Flavour Country'

"The instrumental psych-rock band knows how to choogle, burn and rip like Hawkwind thrown into the middle of a Mad Max set. That's why director Lowell Dean tapped Shooting Guns to score Wolfcop, a 2014 horror-comedy that's exactly as ridiculous/awesome as you think it is." -- NPR

Canada's award-nominated psych 6-piece Shooting Guns premiere the first song from their forthcoming third album Flavour Country today via Exclaim! Hear and share the blistering track "French Safe" HERE. (Direct Soundcloud.)

Shooting Guns is known (and oft-nominated) for their film soundtrack work, but Flavour Country is more like a collection of anthems for your jettison from this universe into the multiverse.

While they're known for heavy and saturated sounds befitting crazed horror-comedy flicks like Netflix hit WolfCop, Flavour Country features some of the band's fastest, heaviest and most visceral material to date. Yet, it also features some of the band's most atmospheric sounds as well.

At times there are slight hints of Ennio Morricone's Spaghetti Western twang amidst the looping Meddle-era Pink Floyd heavy psych and driving drone reminiscent of Bobby Beausoleil's belladonna laced soundtrack to Kenneth Anger's Lucifer Rising. But for the most part here, Shooting Guns is out for blood, regardless of tempo.

Album opener "Ride Free" kicks off with a blistering wall of guitars blaring and rattling out of the gate like mutant progeny to fellow Canadian biker-rock heroes Steppenwolf having duly fired all of the guns, exploded into space and returned to hunt down every last one of us. It accelerates from there: "French Safe" sounds like an unhinged battalion of musicians driving full throttle like a scene from a George Miller Road Warrior movie. Biting, lengthier tracks like "Simian Shelf" and the title track occupy the heavy end of the psychedelic spectrum, haunting the foggy moor between early, bluesy Sabbath-styled doom riffery and heavy pulse-riding kraut-rock.

Flavour Country is the first album recorded by the band themselves at their own Pre-Rock Studios in Saskatoon, SK, located in the middle of the Canadian prairies. The album title's spelling is itself a nod to the band's Great White North homeland. The album was mastered by John McBain (ex-Monster Magnet, Carlton Melton), who also mastered the band's previous RidingEasy releases.

Shooting Guns have toured over 60,000 miles across Canada over the past 7 years but have yet to tour Internationally, which will be a big focus for them after this release. They are touring their live score to F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu across Canada throughout 2017 and also just finished scoring the soundtrack to Another WolfCop (sequel to WolfCop), which is slated for a US theatrical release in September 2017. Their sophomore LP, Brotherhood of the Ram, released in 2013 through RidingEasy Records was nominated for the 2015 JUNO Metal/Hard Album of the Year as well as the Polaris Music Prize. Their debut LP, Born To Deal in Magic: 1952-1976, was also nominated for the Polaris Music Prize in 2012.

Flavour Country will be available on LP, CD and download on August 11th, 2017 via RidingEasy Records

Suspirians -- Austin hypnotic trio w/ mbrs Roky Erickson band & ST37 -- share new track from upcoming album

"40 minutes' worth of feedback-drenched, brain-melting rock that straddles the line between the Stooges' impatient punk and Roky Erickson's heady jams." -- Clrvynt

"A roaring expedition of spellbinding psych punk." -- Austin Chronicle

Austin trio Suspirians premiere a new song from their forthcoming sophomore album today alongside an interview with the Austin Chronicle. The album's epic centerpiece "Black Holes" is available to hear and share HERE. (Direct Soundcloud.)

Tiny Mix Tapes recently shared the entrancing "Moonwave" HERE. (Direct Soundcloud.) Clrvynt previously launched "Nocturne" HERE. (Direct Soundcloud.)

Rock music, when done right, will always take us into a netherworld that we never knew existed, but we always somehow felt was within ourselves. The cosmos of inescapable rhythm, in-your-face melody and words, all speak simple truths that perhaps we couldn't speak for ourselves. Austin, TX trio Suspirians summons that netherworld with their sophomore album Ti Bon Ange

The album title is taken from a Haitian voodoo term that translates literally to "little good angel" - the part of one's soul that holds one's individuality and personal qualities, which leaves the body when sleeping so you can dream. It's a title quite befitting of the experience listening to Ti Bon Ange, where listeners become immersed in a sound, not just casually attending to it.

From the first notes of the album, throughout its 7-song, 40 minute duration it's clear that Suspirians aim to deconstruct rock in a way that's both psychedelic and mysterious as much as it's direct, infectious and powerful. Guitarist/vocalist Marissa Pool, bassist/keyboardist Stephanie Demopulos and drummer Lisa Cameron craft songs that shape-shift from part to part rather than follow traditional verse-chorus-verse structure. It's a wall of guitars and subtle synth layers, vocals drenched in reverb and on the brink of feedback, powerful and open drumming that allows the songs to flow like molten lava without ever sounding lethargic. Points of reference bridge a wide array of psychedelic, punk and experimental sounds: Pylon, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sonic Youth, The Stooges first album, Frightwig, early Butthole Surfers, Roky Erickson & The Aliens, late 70s British post-punk and more.

"We would end up getting lost in the songs together in a sort of epic fever dream," Pool says. "We did not overthink or over control anything on this record. It was all about going with the flow and following our instincts." Suspirians' self-titled debut album - with original drummer Anna Lamphear - was comparatively a more straightforward and garagey affair. Pool and Demopulos began experimenting with their sound soon after and with the addition of Cameron, they collectively found the aesthetic they were after. Cameron's extensive musical history - having played with the legendary Roky Erickson, as well as celebrated Austin psych band ST37 and other improv/noise projects - helped the band expand its vision.

Ti Bon Ange was recorded at 5th Street Studios with engineer Evan Kleinecke, while the band was still navigating their way through the nascent songs. "We had some raw and powerful basic tracks to bounce off of and the rest of the time was just having fun playing really loud and experimenting," Pool says. The results are equally as deliberate and completely free as groundbreaking rock'n'roll should be.

Ti Bon Ange will be available on LP, CD and download on June 9th via Super Secret Records

Chicago heavy/90s alt-rock/shoegazers PINK FROST premiere new track from first new album in 4 years

"An increasingly commanding quartet that embraces the power of guitar drone, tribal drum and the deep, shoegaze-era swoon." -- Chicago Tribune

"Off-kilter, yearning rock music that strives for a populism that's considered a bit declassé by most of their peers and, as such, badly missed." -- Pitchfork

Chicago's critically-praised quartet Pink Frost premiere a new track from their first proper full length album in 4 years today via Impose. Hear and share the dreamy psychedelic ballad "Avian" HERE. (Direct Soundcloud.)

Clrvynt recently shared lead single "Bare Roots" HERE. (Direct Soundcloud and Bandcamp.) Bandcamp Daily featured "Bare Roots" in their New & Notable section, calling it a "serrated, terrifying take on psych-rock."

So much has changed so quickly in recent times, it's hard to even really recognize who we were just a short time ago. Are we ever who we thought we were?

New Minds, the first proper full length in nearly 4 years from Chicago quartet Pink Frost, addresses a collective sense of abrupt changes. "There is a sentimentality or a sense of loss that permeates most of the songs," says vocalist/guitarist Adam Lukas. "Whether that is the loss of truth, the ones you love, your place in the universe, or general sense of meaning in changing landscapes."

And while Pink Frost, too, has transformed in that time, New Minds proves to be an immense growth in dynamics, introspection and the band's own sense of identity. The album showcases a diverging sound in which the straight ahead rock songs are heavier and darker, while the blissed out space jams and melodies are more delicate and personal.

Vocalist/guitarist Adam Lukas and guitarist Paige Sandlin with new bassist Alex Shumard and drummer Jesse Hozeny deftly steer these lyrical themes and sonic trajectories with a fitting starkness as well as melodic contrast. The album's deep grey on black cover art nicely illustrates the mood captured within.

Album opener and title track "New Minds" wastes no time kicking things off full throttle, setting the album's tone with driving downstroke guitars and fast-clip syncopated drums as Lukas sings, "there's no wrong/ There's no right/ We hide in the light." Surprisingly, the song about living in a post-truth world was written and recorded before the recent election cycle. Its vision of a looming dystopia just happened to arrive a bit early. "Bare Roots" hits like a long lost outtake from Black Sabbath's Sabotage with a brick wall solid riff and Lukas' wailing vocals leading the charge until the song suddenly subsides into a lulling respite of lightly plucked strings and whispered vocals. But the break is short-lived, as the song again erupts into an even more formidable obelisk of heavy riffs layered with a soaring guitar melody that continually builds upon itself until the song collapses under its own heft. "Avian" takes a turn to more psychedelic balladry of Arthur Lee & Love, showcasing the album's further explorations into more subdued melodies. The simmering anthem "Burn Before Dawn" leads into the subtle album closer "We No Time" -- a slight reference to the song "We Know Time" from the band's first album, but even more so an adaptation of a song that precedes the band, originally recorded by Lukas on 4-track cassette using drum loops and sounds that were painstakingly reconstructed in the studio. While the song was being mixed, riots were breaking out in the streets during the inauguration of Donald Trump, which can be heard in news snippets fading in toward the end of the song.

New Minds was recorded in Chicago at Steve Albini's legendary Electrical Audio studio with engineer Gregoire Yeche, just as the band has done on Sundowning (2013) and the Traitors EP (2014). "Electrical Audio is almost like another member of the band at this point," Lukas says. "There is a purity to their method that captures the essence of the performance and preserves it in this magical 3-D way."

Sundowning received an onslaught of praise from such revered outlets as Pitchfork, SPIN, Noisey, Magnet Magazine and Chicago Reader, as well as song placements in a feature film ("The Lookalike"), TV's The Vampire Diaries, CSI: Miami and more. In December 2015, Pink Frost released a completely remixed, rethought and remastered version of their debut album Gargoyle Days, originally issued under the band's former name Apteka

New Minds will be available on LP, CD and download on June 16th, 2017 via Under Road Records. Pre-orders are available at iTunes and Bandcamp

spoony bard -- L.A. Beat Scene meets electronic, jazz & avant-garde -- streaming full album ahead of release

"Blends the jazzy psychedelia of fellow beatmaker Flying Lotus with the darkly surreal hip-hop of Dälek and the harmonious atmosphere of classic jazz fusion." -- Treble

NYC musician spoony bard (lowercase, please) is streaming his forthcoming new album Dweeb in its entirety over at TrebleZine. Hear and share the full album dweeb HERE. (Direct Soundcloud.)

The Spill Magazine recently premiered lead track, "Misgiving" HERE. And, the song was also featured in Bandcamp Weekly HERE. Northern Transmissions launched "vibe/void" HERE. CultureCreature featured album closer "Commoner" HERE

Like the video game garbled insult of its namesake, spoony bard is the result of a cultural collision as well as an honest and self-deprecating exploration of life. The hybrid of L.A. beat scene, electronic, jazz and avant-garde takes a fresh approach to musical soul-bearing with compelling sonic textures and introspective lyrics. spoony bard combines hints of Flying Lotus, Dalek, DJ Premier, Herbie Hancock, Aphex Twin and more.

spoony bard is the alter-ego of musician David Nord. Originally a jazz composer/guitarist, Nord's equal interest in hip-hop and electronic sounds brought about an evolution in his work, leading him to merge these styles and explore the possibilities of an alternate musical vocabulary.

"Just playing jazz wasn't cutting it anymore," Nord says. "I started hearing the L.A. beat scene type stuff that was coming out and got inspired to really dive deeper into synthesizers, sampling, music software, etc., while also continuing to hone the harmonic and melodic approach that I had developed as a jazz musician."

Dweeb is the 8-song full length debut of spoony bard. The album is filled with delightful instrumental passages like the glitchy organs, tiny piano plinking and diced rhythms of the title track, as well as contemplative sung/rapped passages like, "I'm living with so many misgivings, they weigh me down but I don't care / She once told me that I scare them away, I said well they scare me, but at least I'm not afraid of myself like I used to be." Elsewhere, mellow trip-hop leaning tones and beats turn on a dime into cathartic raps. Throughout, Dweeb is a thoroughly unique and revealing album from an artist unhindered by genres and rules.

Dweeb will be available for download on May 12th via Bandcamp, iTunes, Spotify, Apple Music, etc.

Sargent House's newest band BRUTUS streams entire debut album ahead of release

"A powerful and thrilling blend of punk, rock, indie and hardcore that'll get the teeth in your skull rattling." - NME

"Brutus contribute an intriguing new voice to underground music." -- Rock Sound

"They're in a field of their own... this is one of the albums of the year" (5/5 Ks) -- KERRANG!

Belgian trio Brutus are streaming the forthcoming worldwide release of their debut album Burst starting today via Clrvynt. Hear and share the full album HERE. (Direct Soundcloud HERE.)

Sargent House recently signed Brutus to its label and management roster and will soon release the band's debut in North America and the rest of the world in partnership with Hassle Records, the band's European label. "My reaction was immediate, the second I heard the first track I was hooked and knew I wanted to be part of this band's team," says Cathy Pellow, who also manages such artists as Chelsea Wolfe, Deafheaven, Russian Circles to name just a few.

Metal Injection recently premiered the first single from the album, "All Along" HERE. Brooklyn Vegan launched the track "Drive" HERE

Hailing from Leuven, Belgium, Brutus create a pummeling, meteor-shower of sound. Vocalist/drummer Stefanie Mannaerts mixes black-metal blast beats with math-rock flourishes whilst belting out the most impassioned vocals that shift from deceptively melodic to outright larynx-punishing in the blink of an eye. Meanwhile, guitarist Stijn Vanhoegaerden takes ethereal post-rock tones to hardcore punk levels of speed and energy alongside Peter Mulders' powerful sub-frequency shift. The three conspire to make a sound as monolithic and frantic as it is emotive.

Having gigged rigorously across Belgium, in April 2016 Brutus decamped to Vancouver, BC to record Burst. "We sent an email to Jesse Gander (Japandroids, White Lung), his reply with sushi emoji's was an instant ticket," Stefanie explains. "The time in Canada, living together and working in the studio was refreshing, inspiring, healing and confronting at the same time." Burst is the perfect title for this debut album, then. "It's the perfect title for me," Stefanie adds. "It's a ball of emotions, ready to burst with frustration and anger. But also with tons of energy, love... everything at once." Trouble comes in threes... and so does Brutus.

Burst will be available digitally worldwide on May 12th, 2017 and physically on June 30th, 2017 via Sargent House. Pre-orders for LP/CD via HelloMerch and download via iTunes

"For this record, I had to dig deep into hidden and guarded emotions," Stefanie reveals. "It's not so easy to sing about myself, so I used the third person. And it's also not easy to drum a blast-beat over a melodic vocal to capture some exact feelings. 'All Along' is for a loved one, a band, the friends around me that are actually able to stand me."
