Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group announces U.S. live debut in September

The phenomenally productive artist Omar Rodriguez Lopez has announced the U.S. live debut for the Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group in September, directly following performing at the Metamorphose Festival in Japan. Tickets went on sale this week for the four shows listed below. The NYC date is already sold out. The Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group for these performances feature Ximena Sarinana Rivera, Juan Alderete De La Pena (The Mars Volta), Marcel Rodriguez Lopez (The Mars Volta, Zechs Marquise) and Deantoni Parks.

Hand-picked support for these dates will be the massively buzzed-about Le Butcherettes from Guadalajara, Mexico, whose forthcoming U.S. debut album Sin Sin Sin was produced by Omar. The group also tours Europe and Russia with Le Butcherettes in November.

Omar Rodriguez Lopez is an intensely prolific Grammy-winning recording artist whose genre-defying, fifteen-year career has resulted in some 35 albums. His seminal and critically acclaimed band, At the Drive-In, redefined popular rock music at the end of the last decade. Since that time, in addition to being both a solo artist and leader/composer/producer of the The Mars Volta, Rodriguez Lopez has produced groundbreaking recordings for the likes of Juliette Lewis and collaborated with Hans Zimmer, John Frusciante, and Erykah Badu, to name a few. Additionally, his Rodriguez Lopez Productions continues to release bold and innovative recordings, including upcoming releases from Le Butcherettes, Zechs Marquise, The Eternals, Big Sir and Vato Negro

Tera Melos release first video from forthcoming album, Patagonian Rats

Click image above to watch video

Long-running Sacramento genre-benders Tera Melos have released the first of several videos created to accompany the trio's forthcoming album Patagonian Rats. The video for the song "The Skin Surf" -- directed by Behn Fannin (The Melvins, Nurses) -- shows the band at its quirky, clever finest. Watch it HERE.

The wily melodies and scurrying rhythms of Patagonian Rats will be released this fall via Sargent House. Check out the first MP3 "Frozen Zoo" taken from the album HERE. Alternately, fans can download the song in any file format HERE.

Have Tera Melos gone… pop? Well, no….but yes. Much like the trio's intricate and complex song structures, it's not quite that simple. Tera Melos' songs have traditionally been densely packed with so many wild shifts of time signature and chord structures that guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist Nick Reinhart jokes they were sounds that, "only wizards could decipher."

Patagonian Rats is packed with melodic hooks and jabs that on paper might seem to defy the band's experimental edge. There's even clear and distinct vocals throughout -- a first for the band, where vocals, if any, were previously awash with distortion and layered in the mix. But, particulars aside, Patagonian Rats is the type of album that sticks with you.

Occasionally, "pop" music has really meant daring music. Like the Beach Boys in the late 60s, The Clash in the 70s, Devo in the 80s, Flaming Lips in the 90s -- the greatest artists have dared to make music that is hooky while also being groundbreaking. Patagonian Rats evokes images of bizarre and fantastic alternate realities. Think about the first time you heard "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys; jarring collisions of a cappella harmonies, tremolo-washed bass and chirping theremin. The key is not to understand it, but to let the music transform everyday reality into something new. And, that is the essence of Patagonian Rats.

Tera Melos formed in 2004 as a quartet, releasing their first self-titled disc in 2005 (later re-released by Sargent House in 2008). The band became a trio in late 2006, releasing the Drugs to the Dear Youth EP early the following year. A split disc with By The End of Tonight (2007) on Temporary Residence and an EP of cover songs, Idioms, Vol 1 followed in 2009. In the meantime, Reinhart collaborated with prolific drummer Zach Hill under the band name bygones, releasing the by- album in 2009 and Spiritual Bankruptcy EP in 2010, both on Sargent House. Clardy has also recently spent downtime as the touring drummer with guitar goddess Marnie Stern.

Patagonian Rats will be available everywhere via Sargent House on September 7th, 2010.

Zach Hill announces Face Tat with impressive guests

Massively talented and incessantly collaborative drummer Zach Hill (see a semi-comprehensive list of projects here) has announced a fall 2010 release for his second solo album, Face Tat. The 13-track disc features an impressive list of contributors, including Devendra Banhart, No Age (Dean Spunt and Randy Randall), Guillermo Scott Herren (Prefuse 73), Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), Carson McWhirter (Hella), Nick Reinhart (Tera Melos, Bygones) and Robby Moncrieff (Raleigh Moncrieff).

Pitchfork has posted the latest video off the album, featuring a woman on a violent rampage set to the tune "The Sacto Smile". Watch it HERE. The song features co-writers Spunt and Randall of No Age as well as Tera Melos guitarist Nick Reinhart, who also plays with Hill in the duo, Bygones

Check out the first MP3 from Face Tat, "Memo To the Man"  HERE. The song features Greg Saunier of Deerhoof double-drumming with Hill, along with Reinhart on guitar.

Zach Hill explains the origins of Face Tat in his own words:

"This record was titled prior to any of its music being made, based on an article I had read about people with facial tattoos potentially having a higher suicide rate than those without. I have friends with facial tattoos who are some of the most positive people I know, and have friends & family without facial tattoos that have taken their own lives within this past year. I found that idea very interesting and metaphorical on many levels -- whether true or not -- and began using my personal thoughts on this as a muse/concept that could be applied to many different contexts. Musically, socially, politically, the Internet, whatever else… generally the idea/concept of 'platforms'.

"These thoughts were just a starting point and motivation for me though. The music itself is of course the focal point. This started from myself and friends making the kind of abrasive/forward music in 'pop' form I'd want to hear, but hadn't. There's an emphasis on experimenting with 'destroying' sounds so that the source of  the melody, rhythms, vocals, etc., is not recognizable or traceable, and then building these things into abstract forms of pop music with conventional structures. Some of the most melodic aspects to this recording are coming from things like the sound of pissing/urinating on a stack of Rolling Stone magazines (I have a subscription), kicking in the screen of a computer, arguments on the street, etc.

"Lyrically, many of the songs started from me writing down a lot of out-of-context sentences I'd hear in passing or from personal exchanges that I found really visual, stimulating or to which I felt a connection. So, I wrote stories out of things I'd gathered -- in line at the store, in a dream, visiting family in jail, after a show, on a plane, talking with the homeless, etc. -- and formed them into songs and shaped them into subjects that I relate to. I like the idea of making these very real but obscure moments that are otherwise unknown or gone forever into their own weird little worlds. So, I'm very stoked about this record & I'm very excited for other people to hear it and as always I hope that people will gain something positive from it."

Red Sparowes announce North American dates with Boris, EU / UK tour in fall 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
July 15th, 2010

Red Sparowes announce North American dates with Boris, EU / UK tour in fall 2010

Los Angeles epic, heavy quintet Red Sparowes has announced North American tour dates with Japanese heavy-psych band Boris in August, followed by European and UK shows in fall 2010. The band is currently supporting its third full-length album, The Fear Is Excruciating, But Therein Lies The Answer which was released via Sargent House earlier this year. See complete tour dates and album details below.

Check out the first MP3 track off the album, "Giving Birth To Imagined Saviors" posted HERE. A video teaser for the album has also been posted HERE.

Thunderheads storming across the prairie, outraged students taking to the streets, migratory herds stampeding along the tundra--any number of images could describe the grandiose scope of Red Sparowes’ lush vignettes. Wielding both a master’s sense of nuance and an outsider artist’s unhindered expressionist zeal, the Los Angeles quintet created a catalog of haunting and hallucinatory guitar orchestrations over the course of the millennium’s opening decade. With two albums, a string of split releases, multiple U.S. and European tours, and a number of line-up changes under their belt, Red Sparowes have issued their most impressive creation to date, The Fear is Excruciating, But Therein Lies the Answer.

Though Red Sparowes’ music thrives unbound by narrative, the band provides a roadmap to their muse. Their 2005 debut album, At The Soundless Dawn, cast the scientific inevitability of the Sixth Extinction into a grand funeral oration, revealing the message within the individual track titles. Their second full-length, Every Red Heart Shines Toward the Red Sun (2006) provided a synopsis of the Great Sparrow campaign of the Great Leap Forward, laying bare its conceptual role. The Aphorisms EP (2008 digital, 2009 12" vinyl) served a thematic precursor to the new album.

Red Sparowes' latest offering, The Fear is Excruciating, But Therein Lies the Answer, began with the larger existential pondering of truth, faith, order, causality, and the innate demand for an understanding of the larger world around us. While Red Sparowes’ majesty is hardly in need of story, the provision of the larger metaphor yields a heightened depth and gravity to their work.

Thee More Shallows, Ral Partha Vogelbacher members debut new duo: Fops

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
July 13th, 2010

Thee More Shallows singer Dee Kesler and Ral Partha Vogelbacher lyricist Chadwick Donald Bidwell have joined forces to form a superduo called Fops. In the short time that Fops has been a band, they've already completed two full length albums. The first CD/LP, Yeth, Yeth, Yeth will be released worldwide this fall via UK label Monotreme Records (65Daysofstatic, Nedry, Barzin)

Check out the first MP3s from the album, "Solid Copper Huntress" (HERE) and "Maple Mountain" (HERE).

Taking their musical cues from the syncopated electronic figures of Krautrockers such as Cluster and Faust, and the propulsive, brooding pop of the bands they grew up listening to in the 80’s, the duo recorded two albums: Album 1, Yeth Yeth Yeth, will be released in September 2010, and Album 2, Priests In Them Caves, will follow in early 2011.

Both LPs are novels at heart, investigating the possible and impossible, gaudy and fantastical, mundane and downright depressing pasts and futures of a single protagonist.  In the world of Fops, Kesler is the narrator, telling stories in Bidwell’s singular lyrical style.

The vinyl format comes on 180 gm audiophile vinyl and includes a free promo CD of the album.

Fang Island tour with Flaming Lips, Stone Temple Pilots, headline Europe and premiere new video on Pitchfork

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
July 1st, 2010

Click image above to watch video

"Honest and life-affirming and infectious, and it's that rare concentration of directness and simplicity that makes Fang Island so uniquely and wonderfully inclusive." Best New Music -- Pitchfork

"Fang Island are simply killer fun, a proper gang who sing collectively and pummel their guitars without recourse to errant soloing." Four Stars -- MOJO

Fang Island is clearly not an immobile landmass. This weekend, the Brooklyn based high-fiving guitar-anthem optimists kick off dates supporting indie-rock legends the Flaming Lips. In August, Fang Island support the reunited Stone Temple Pilots. Soon thereafter, the band embarks on their first headlining tour  of the UK and Europe in September, starting in Dublin at the Electric Picnic. As if that weren't enough, Fang Island has also added the Pygmalion Music Festival and Midpoint Music Festival, as well as a Williamsburg Waterfront performance to its busy itinerary. Please see below for complete dates.

Today, Pitchfork premieres the quintet's latest video, "Careful Crossers" which was shot in Los Angeles in the storied Glassroom at Sargent House. This marks the band's third video to debut on the popular web site which previously featured videos for "Daisy" and "Life Coach".

Fang Island's self-titled debut album hit shelves on February 23rd via Sargent House amid a wealth of praise from press, with many writers declaring it one of the Best of 2010, just two months into the new year. A digital EP featuring the popular album track "Daisy" backed with Chris Keating of Yeasayer's remix of "Absolute Place" off their Sky Gardens EP preceded the full length in January.

Its finger-tapping guitar lines, chanted vocals, triumphant harmonies and overall perky songs hearken to the sort of "Total Music" of the Jay Reatard, Ponytail, Kraftwerk, Marnie Stern, Thin Lizzy, et al. But, perhaps more so, its songs are like the music in your head at that moment when everything feels just right: that first kiss, that high score on the video game, buying your first small nation in cash... you know, good stuff. Check out MP3s for two tracks, "Daisy" (MP3 HERE) and "Life Coach" (MP3 HERE).

Fang Island began, oddly enough, as an art school project while the band members were attending the prodigious Rhode Island School of Design (also the foundation for Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Les Savvy Fav, Six Finger Satellite, Lightning Bolt and some band called the Talking Heads.) According to guitarist Jason Bartell, the goal was to "make music for people who like music." That is, music without irony that harnesses its uplifting qualities. Just like a classic rock song or classical symphony can stir us emotionally, Fang Island exists to unlock that spirit.

Fang Island is guitarist Jason Bartell, bassist Michael Jacober, guitarist Chris Georges, guitarist Nicholas Andrew Sadler, and drummer Marc St. Sauveur. They all share collective group vocal harmonies and the occasional hand claps. While Sadler is also known for his role in the debauched rock band Daughters, it is only his fretboard skill that translates between the two groups.
