"Honest, life-affirming and infectious, and it's that rare concentration of directness and simplicity that makes Fang Island so uniquely and wonderfully inclusive." Best New Music -- Pitchfork

"Fang Island are simply killer fun, a proper gang who sing collectively and pummel their guitars without recourse to errant soloing." Four Stars -- MOJO

Brooklyn's beloved guitar-anthem optimists Fang Island have released the first retail single from their forthcoming sophomore album, Major. The digital single for album track "Sisterly" comes paired with a remix version by Anamanaguchi and is available everywhere now. Listen to a stream of the remix HERE

Fang Island has also added new dates to their upcoming summer headlining tour, with support on partially overlapping stretches from Irish genre-benders Adebisi Shank and The Mars Volta sibling heavy groove outfit Zechs Marquise. Please see complete dates below.

Pitchfork recently premiered MP3s for the tracks "Asunder" (HERE) and "Sisterly" (HERE).

Fang Island announce their return with an album befitting its title: Major. In anticipation of the album's summer release, the band has posted teaser videos #1 HERE and #2 HERE

Like the painstakingly chiseled marble of the album artwork, Major is hefty, solid, monolithic and regal. Whereas Fang Island described their celebrated 2010 self-titled Sargent House debut as, "everyone high-fiving everyone," Major is evermore confident, triumphant and brimming with infectious enthusiasm. Its warm harmonies are given proper berth with more expansive dynamics and focused pop song craft.

"One of our core ideas has always been that our songs would be all of your favorite parts of the song that other bands make you wait 8 minutes to get to," explains guitarist/vocalist Jason Bartell. "We wanted to be the band that's nothing but your favorite hooks back to back." Major shows Fang Island deftly achieving that aim.

Throughout, Major highlights the band's endeavor to elevate positivity as an art form. "It's kind of similar to writing songs about being sad," Bartell says. "It can come across as simplistic, or easy. Positive songs often run the risk of sounding shallow, but we feel there are a lot of shades and depths to positivity that can be explored." That exploration becomes clear from the first notes of Major

However, Georges sums up the album's bold steps best in this short sampling of the band's nearly 1,000 bullet point explanation of the album title:

"Some reasons we called the album Major
- Major key (the first song is minor though!)
- Valley girl colloquialism
- Because we are on an independent label
- Because the rank under Sargent (House) is major
- It sounds like a constellation
- Steely Dan's "Any Major Dude" was in rotation a lot during the sessions
- The record is packaged to look like stone because it's ROCK. I really wanted people to hold a piece of rock when they picked up the record."

Major will be available everywhere on LP, CD and download via Sargent House on July 24th, 2012.

Crypts announce Sargent House album debut, dates with Russian Circles, Chelsea Wolfe

Click image above to watch video (YouTube) (Vimeo)

Seattle dark electronic trio Crypts announce details of their forthcoming self-titled Sargent House debut album today, also posting an eerie mind-warping video for album track "Fancy" to watch HERE (check out MP3 HERE). The clip was directed and edited by Crypts member and visual artist Nick Bartoletti.

Additionally, Crypts upcoming shows include a night supporting Russian Circles and a run in September with Chelsea Wolfe -- dates to come. The also play their hometown at Seattle's Capitol Hill Block Party on July 20th.

The long, slow demise of rock music has endured endless death throes, but the self-titled debut album by Crypts seems to clearly seal its fate while heralding the arrival of something far more vibrant and downright dangerous. The trio blends thick, hazy drone and synth noise with chopped-up hip hop rhythms, forsaking guitars in favor of more unique and sinister sounds.

Vocalist Steve Snere, former frontman of chaotic punk revisionists These Arms Are Snakes, brings a snarling urgency to the songs, while programmer Bryce Brown blasts out an aural assault of horror show noise, subsonic bass and skittering rhythms. Meanwhile, visual artist Nick Bartoletti creates a total environment of light and video projections for the band's live experience as well as its decidedly nihilistic aesthetic. It's an all-out attack on the senses that comes across as fresh and invigorating as the early days of punk.

"I needed a change of pace, to take myself out of the guitar-based rock world," says vocalist Steve Snere. "And the three of us wanted to experiment to find a sound that we wanted to hear." The result is the intense, occasionally bleak, yet endlessly enthralling debut album. Comparisons range from Wolf Eyes meets Christian Death to Skinny Puppy playing Dizzee Rascal. But these touch points seem to only scratch the surface of the snarling beast within Crypts

The album was engineered with Erik Blood (Shabazz Palaces), building upon basics recorded by Brown on Pro-Tools to which the band added live instruments. Most of the sounds were generated on home-built and modified equipment. Live, the band uses a homemade sound-reactive video device for its startling visuals. "We play everything live, there's no loops," Brown explains. "It's not a lot of button-pushing. Nick runs visuals live, while also playing synths. It's more like a rock band in a live setting."

Crypts opens with the fittingly titled "Completely Fucked", awash with slithering John Carpenter soundtrack synths oozing over galloping drum machine beats and synthetic handclaps. Nearly buried beneath the din, Snere moans and wails, building to a screaming crescendo like a maniac. And, with a choked growl, the song ends just barely over 2-minutes, launching into the hip-hop beat and almost bubbly-sounding keyboards of "Daft." Elsewhere, the trio lean into The Cure's Pornography-era gloom-pop ("Territories") and dark, anthemic hooks ("Bloods"). Throughout, it's a vastly energetic, albeit downright depraved sounding album thanks to Snere's effectively dramatic and versatile vocals and the band's innovative collision of musical aesthetics.

Crypts will be released on LP, CD and download via Sargent House on September 4th, 2012.

British group Maybeshewill announce upcoming album and US tour

Click image above to watch video

"A daring artistic shift, moving from the linear esoterica of Mogwai towards their more kaleidoscopic contemporaries 65daysofstatic. By the final brilliant closer 'To The Skies From A Hillside', not only is their wellspring of underlying grandeur being tapped, it's also clear that there's even greeter things to come, too." 4/5 -- Kerrang

"Epic guitars, crashing drums and intense keys -- it's a dramatic record that will shake your bones." -- NME

Leicestershire, UK's Maybeshewill announce the forthcoming North American release of their third album, I Was Here For A Moment, Then I Was Gone. The disc hits shelves September 11th via British label Function Records. The quintet will tour stateside in support of the album this Fall.

Check out official videos for album tracks "To The Skies From A Hillside" HERE and "Critical Distance" HERE.

Maybeshewill is James Collins (drums), Matt Daly (keyboards) John Helps (guitar), Robin Southby (guitar) and Jamie Ward (bass). They’ve worked tirelessly over the past five years through endless touring and three full-length albums to build a loyal and enthusiastic following across the world. Sticking to steadfastly DIY ethics, the band have self-recorded all their material to date and aspire to be as self sufficient as possible.

The band released their debut four-track EP entitled Japanese Spy Transcript on their own label, Robot Needs Home Records in early 2006 which was later picked up by Japan’s XTAL Recordings (Caspian, Yndi Halda) and released in an extended form in August of the same year. Nottingham’s Field Records released the band's self-recorded debut album Not For Want Of Trying in May 2008. The record was Huw Stephen’s album of the week on his BBC Radio 1 show in its week of release and received glowing reviews from RockSound (8/10), Kerrang (4/5) and Drowned In Sound (8/10), amongst many others. After touring the release extensively around the UK with friends Fight Fire With Water, Worriedaboutsatan and And So I Watch You From Afar, they quickly began working on their second fell-length.

A year later, in June 2009, Sing The Word Hope In Four-Part Harmony was released, once again through Field Records. After much touring worldwide, the band joined the Function Records roster in 2011, releasing I Was Here For A Moment, Then I Was Gone in the UK, Europe and Japan in June. The album was once again self-recorded with Jamie at the board, though this time the band worked in more traditional recording studios.

The album received wide-spread critical acclaim across the board, including Kerrang (4/5), RockSound (8/10), Big Cheese (4/5), NME (7/10) and Artrocker (4/5). In an unprecedented move, the album was played back to back in its entirety on Kerrang Radio in its week of release and gained the band "Band of the Week" accolade on RockSound’s website for two weeks running.

I Was Here For A Moment, Then I Was Gone will be available on LP, CD and download on September 11th, 2012 via Function Records.

Indian Handcrafts post in-studio video for Sargent House album debut, plus tour dates

Click image above to watch video

Canadian power-duo Indian Handcrafts have posted an in-studio video -- featuring cameos from some heavy friends -- announcing their forthcoming Sargent House album debut. The Toronto band's sophomore release, Civil Disobedience For Losers was recorded in Los Angeles back in March with engineer Toshi Kasai (Melvins, Big Business, Red Sparowes). The album will be released in Fall 2012. The clip features the album track "Terminal Horse". Watch teaser video HERE

Indian Handcrafts also take to the road this month with Russian Circles and And So I Watch You From Afar, in addition to playing several Canadian festival appearances throughout the summer. Please see current dates below.

For more Indian Handcrafts, check out a free MP3 for "Red Action" (download/stream HERE) from the band's self-titled 2011 self-released debut (stream the full album via Bandcamp). Watch the official video for "Red Action" HERE and a blistering live performance of "Starcraft" HERE

Indian Handcrafts' well honed, massive melodic heft seems to belie the simplicity of instrumentation between drummer/vocalist Brandyn James Aikins and guitarist/vocalist Daniel Brandon Allen. While their songs feature hints of heavy, technically skilled bands like Big Business and Hella, there are also strong melodies and a vocal intensity inviting comparisons to bands ranging from Trail of Dead to Death From Above 1979 to Big Black
Civil Disobedience For Losers will be available on LP, CD and download Fall 2012 via Sargent House

Russian Circles announce North American and Australian/New Zealand headlining tour dates

"Empros is one of the most viscerally exciting and completely entertaining albums I've heard in a long time. There is perfection in the air and the battle for album of the year just heated up again." 10/10 rating -- Iann Robinson, Crave Online

"It's not a stretch to say it's the band's best album yet." -- Rock-A-Rolla

Chicago trio Russian Circles announce North American and Australian/New Zealand headlining dates beginning this month and running well into Fall. The band will be supported by a plethora of Sargent House family bands along the way, including And So I Watch You From Afar, Chelsea Wolfe, Marriages, Indian Handcrafts, Deafheaven and Crypts. Please see complete dates below.

This continues Russian Circles' already lengthy treks in support of their critically praised new album Empros. SPIN Magazine recently featured a full album stream of Empros. The band also recently premiered an MP3 from the album via RollingStone.com. The song, "Mladek" is available to listen/download HERE.

Russian Circles return with not only their fourth and heaviest album to date -- but also with Empros they're poised to take the crown as innovators reinvigorating the staid trappings of genre. Empros picks up where the anthemic riffs and melodies of 2009's Geneva left off and injects evermore slithering rhythms amid skull-crushing heft with all the visceral intensity of Godflesh, Swans and Neurosis. Put simply, Empros is Russian Circles' Master of Reality: a radical revision of both heavy and melody that is monolithic in its clarity and perfection. Or, like a lone surviving wooly beast emerging from a brutal winter's frost, Empros is the sound of a band shaking the ages from its shoulders with all the brutal force of a behemoth awakened.

Empros is Russian Circles' first full-length to be released worldwide exclusively via Sargent House, the band's longtime management company and record label that had previously released only the vinyl editions of its three prior albums. It was released worldwide on LP, CD and Download on October 25th, 2011.

Redgrave premiere powerful new song in Consequence of Sound interview

"(Redgrave) bring the heavy back to the blues -- but not in some obvious, Jack White kind of way. These blues are the scary kind... Angie Mead's powerful wail is enough to bristle the hairs on the back of your neck." -- Alternative Press
"Sultry dirges"  -- Time Out Chicago

"The Chicago duo takes Sleep’s Holy Mountain, PJ Harvey’s Rid of Me, and The Dead Weather’s Sea Of Cowards and melts them all down into a five song EP that just incinerates everything in its path. " -- Consequence of Sound

Chicago duo Redgrave premiere another track from their forthcoming debut today in a featured interview with Consequence of Sound. The powerfully stomping and gracefully shimmering song "Taunt" is available to stream/download HERE

In celebration of their Lovitt Records 5-song debut, National Act the band plays a series of Midwestern shows this month. Please see complete dates below.

Watch a live in-studio performance video HERE shot at the band's first ever live show. Also, check out the barnstorming first single from National Act, "Dick Moves" streaming HERE

Vocalist/guitarist Angie Mead and drummer Stephen Howard generate a massive sound thanks to Mead's powerful, soaring voice and sludgy open tunings backed by Howard's refined rhythmic stomp. Redgrave's songs have the sort of smoldering intensity shared by PJ Harvey and Led Zeppelin alike that is hard to categorize, but immediately easy to feel. The duo's forthcoming EP, National Act was recorded by revered engineer Greg Norman (Russian Circles, Pelican) and will be available in June via Lovitt Records

Mead started writing and recording Redgrave songs in marathon stretches beginning August 2010 from her home in Chicago after furniture was moved into storage and replaced with recording equipment, drums and guitars. She sent these demos to Chicago musician Stephen Howard, whose work she'd admired as guitarist and drummer in Pinebender. A working musician since the age of 13, Howard had grown up playing local Chicago blues clubs; his teachers included Willie Smith, John Primer and Eddie Clearwater, his classrooms in music included stages across the U.S., Europe and Africa. Mead has always played a right-handed guitar upside down -- a backwards model mimicking Albert King that roughens up her playing. But through playing with Howard, she discovered a way of singing that made her voice crest above his gale-storm drumming. They've been playing together as Redgrave since January 2011.

Redgrave released a 2-song 7" in Fall 2011 on Lovitt Records. Tim Rutili of Califone/Red Red Meat fame lends his guitar prowess to the track "Gone To Wither" on the single, with art design by David Yow of The Jesus Lizard. It was produced by Stephen Howard, recorded and mixed by Greg Norman at his studio in Chicago. Lovitt will issue National Act on 12" vinyl and download on June 12th, 2012.
