Le Butcherettes: Mexico City garage-punks championed by alt-rock royalty announce debut album, tour dates

The rampantly raved-about garage-punk trio Le Butcherettes have announced the worldwide release of their debut album, Sin Sin Sin this spring, as well as a slew of U.S. tour dates that include a highly anticipated performance at SXSW in Austin, TX on March 19th. See complete dates below.

Le Butcherettes are like the brilliant offspring of surrealist Luis Bunuel and intrepid rock icon PJ Harvey. Led by 21-year-old vocalist/guitarist/pianist Teri Gender Bender (a recent transplant to L.A. from Guadalajara, Mexico) Le Butcherettes bring a brazen intensity and playful, hook-laden simplicity that hacks to pieces all forms of pretension and excess.

Check out MP3s for the first tracks from the album, "Henry Don't Got Love" HERE and "New York" HERE

The band's songs and wildly cathartic live shows have often drawn comparisons to Karen O, Patti Smith, Bikini Kill and many other female-fronted rock groups, but there's a theatricality to Le Butcherettes that brings a further reaching sense of mystery and imagery to the band.

Originally forming as a duo, Le Butcherettes began in 2008 as the brainchild of vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist Teri Gender Bender; a self- proclaimed modern feminist who cites Sylvia Plath and Malcolm X as major influences.  Born in Denver, CO to a Mexican stage actress mother and a father who was a fervent lover of the arts, Teri was constantly surrounded by creative energy. Following the death of her father, Teri Gender Bender arrived in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico to begin a new and eventful chapter in her life, and with that the first page of Le Butcherettes was written.

Le Butcherettes quickly garnered acclaim in the Mexican underground music scene. The group's debut EP Kiss & Kill won "Best New Artist" and "Best Punk Record" nominations from Mexico's Indie-O Awards in 2009, and their outrageous and spirited live show captured the attention of both fans and artists alike. By the middle of 2009, Le Butcherettes were tapped by The Yeah Yeah Yeahs to participate in their multi-date "It's Blitz" tour of Mexico. There, Le Butcherettes blew away the press, nightly audiences of 25,000+ spectators and even the members of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs themselves, who demonstrated their passion for the duo, often dedicating songs to the band. Support dates with The Dead Weather soon followed.

Following their legendary sold out L.A. debut performance, Le Butcherettes signed to the prestigious William Morris Endeavor agency for worldwide booking, leading to US dates with The Flaming Lips, Omar Rodriguez Lopez and Jane's Addiction. Festival appearances in 2010 included the main stage alongside The Pixies and Interpol at The Corona Capital Festival in Mexico City and the Sonar Festival in Barcelona. Upon relocating to Los Angeles in late 2010, Teri recruited renowned drummer Gabe Serbian (The Locust) and bassist Jonathan Hischke (Hella, Broken Bells) to round out the lineup.

Le Butcherettes' full length debut, Sin Sin Sin was produced by Omar Rodriguez Lopez, who also plays bass on all of the album's tracks, and will issue the album on May 10th, 2011 on Rodriguez Lopez Productions via Sargent House.

Jail Weddings launch video series for entire 13-song album with debauched first clip

Click image above to watch video

"One of the year’s most exhilarating and infectious records, and an assured statement of purpose by one of L.A.’s most compelling groups." -- NBC San Diego
“Hart's obsessively Orbison-esque vocal pleas can send shivers down the spine and draw a tiny tear to the eye in songs that reek of moody doo-wop and do not skimp on the steamy, heaving punk rock & roll.” – LA Weekly

Los Angeles' garage-punk revision of 60s chamber pop, Jail Weddings has launched an endeavor as ambitious as the 10-piece band's size. Starting with the release of the video for "I Thought You Were Someone I Knew", Jail Weddings will release new videos for each of the 13 songs on their recent album, Love Is Lawless. The debauched clip was directed by Kyle Safieh, edited by Ryan Andrus and, seemingly, nearly derailed by an enthusiastic crowd of extras.

Watch "I Thought You Were Someone I Knew" HERE. Download/stream the song on MP3 HERE.

Love Is Lawless takes the pleading, wide-eyed romance of 60’s pop-vocal idealist tantrums to subterranean levels never previously seen from this genre. A shadow has been cast over the fleeting Utopia of modern love, where we still wear such out of date traditions as marriage and monogamy like shackles on a chain gang. Who better to have cast this shadow then Jail Weddings – a soul-stricken modern day Wall Of Sound rock and roll behemoth, comprised of ten (yes, 10) grown men and women who at least have the guts to admit they have still have the emotional stability of an eternally wounded teenager.

Fronted by Gabriel Hart (explosive frontman and mastermind behind the now defunct LA noir punks The Starvations), Jail Weddings is often described as “Nick Cave fronting The Shangri-Las.” The band has carefully crafted these 13 songs over a three year period (since their actual inception in the summer of 2007), released October 2010 on the still skidding heels of two sold out singles and 2009’s critically acclaimed EP Inconvenient Dreams (White Noise/Tru-Vow).

Sure they may siphon from the 60’s pool, but do not confuse Jail Weddings as any kind of mere throwback act. The sphere of influence is vast, from the grandiose Scott Walker-esque soundscape of the album’s existential opener “How Am I Alive?” to the E-Street Band gone to Hell epic “I Thought You Were Someone I Knew”, to the Sparks meets Meatloaf bombastic melodrama of “What Did You Do With My Gun?”, the band proves its sound is unique as it is limitless.

Even somewhat theatrical in its scope, Love Is Lawless is sprinkled with moments of quieter reprieve as well, with Hart’s folksy “One Of These Days” where he and his vocal bookends (Katya Hubiak and Jada Wagensomer) simply gather around one single acoustic guitar. “Eavesdroppin’" finds Hart and band arranger Brad Caulkins (of LA based band Fool’s Gold) drunken busking free-jazz under a brooding vocal, before the impending “Staring At The Stars” suddenly sneaks up from beneath, making the album explode back into high gear until its unnerving, determined conclusion “The Impossible”.

Swedish atmospheric rock group Jeniferever announce third album borne of tragedy and motion

"It’s personal, every song, every note – it moves out and reaches into you, and you just know that you didn’t find this band, they came looking for you." -- The Red Alert
"The kind of heart-swelling soundscapes that beg to be described in terms of glaciers and geysers." -- Uncut

The sound of Uppsala, Sweden's cult-beloved Jeniferever is often described in epic terms: majestic, soaring, atmospheric, careening, sweeping. And, the quartet's forthcoming third album, Silesia (Monotreme Records) is a fitting example of their masterful meld of melodic pop songcraft with post rock's expansive sonic wanderlust.

Silesia will be available worldwide this April on CD, vinyl and digital download. Check out the lead track from the album, "Waifs And Strays" HERE

Jeniferever – Kristofer Jönson, Martin Sandström, Olle Bilius and Fredrik Aspelin – have previously been compared to some truly otherworldly outfits like The Appleseed Cast, Explosions In The Sky and Immanu El. But every second of Silesia is tied to place and time, bound by reality and borne by experience. It’s less about escape, more confronting the unexpected trials that send one’s life into undulation.
The album’s title is taken from the former name of Berlin’s Ostbahnhof. It was near here, while on tour in 2009, that Kristofer learned that his father had passed away. Reality bit where there was so often release; the structure of life on the road collapsed, and the band cancelled their remaining dates.  Several months later, a third album began to form; while not wholly informed by the recent tragedy, nevertheless the collection bears its title with no little relevance. Said Kristofer, “I liked the idea of naming it after a railway station since it's a place of motion, a place where people arrive and depart and sometimes maybe depart never to come back...” And, the end product is Jeniferever’s brightest, most immediate long-player yet. From pain, confidence; from darkness, light.
Two previous albums – 2006’s Choose a Bright Morning and 2009’s Spring Tides – earned the band the affections of in-the-know admirers. It was easy to be charmed by their soft-focus dynamics, their soaring climaxes and emotions-stirring textures. But it wasn’t so easy to chance upon their fare, and word of mouth has largely driven the group’s reach. Whether Silesia breaks through the invisible divide between underground and mainstream is out of the band’s hands. But there are moments of snappy accessibility that will surely tick relevant radio boxes, given the chance.
There’s a crack and strut to "The Beat of Our Own Blood", the album’s third track. “Goodbye to bright spotlights,” sings Kristofer, taking the listener into the belly of the urban beast, through a city’s trains and tunnels. "Deception Pass" might be the band’s heaviest song yet, drums and bass combining to kick up a turbulent maelstrom of menace. "Hearths" threads elegant atmospherics like satellite trails across a starry sky, and the title-track’s sentiment, while stemming from a single heart, is truly universal.
Leaves fall, ice builds, the sun breaks cover, flowers blossom. Everything’s part of a cycle, every aspect has its beauty. Silesia is an album of similar changes and contrasts, of life and death, and just as fascinating as the forever-changing nature of what’s outside your window.

Omar Rodriguez Lopez announces elaborate solo recording anthology, plus Coachella and SXSW live performances

Immensely prolific Grammy Award winning recording artist Omar Rodriguez Lopez (The Mars Volta, At The Drive-In) announces the spring 2011 release of a quadruple LP / double CD collection culled from his multiple solo and collaborative albums. In celebration of this, Rodriguez Lopez's eponymous band will perform at this year's Coachella Festival and SXSW Music Festival (Sargent House/Rodriguez Lopez Productions showcase). Headlining tour dates are also in the works for late spring.

The extensive 37-song (38 on the vinyl version) compilation of the guitarist's work, titled Telesterion showcases the variety and breadth of explorative artistry spread across his 25 (and counting) solo albums harvested for this release. For those unsure where to begin discovering Omar's vast catalog, this is a fitting introduction. Telesterion includes a 20-page booklet of artwork and text outlining the scope of his work, with liner notes by longtime friend and Rodriguez Lopez Productions art director Sonny Kay. See Sonny's recollection of their first meeting through to their current collaborations HERE

Check out sample tracks "Locomocion Capillar" HERE and "Shake is for 8th Graders" HERE. Stream/download all of Omar's solo releases HERE

Omar Rodriguez Lopez's genre-defying sixteen-year career has resulted in more than 40 albums, a Grammy Award and being deemed among Rolling Stone's "Greatest Guitarists Of All Time." His seminal and critically acclaimed band, At the Drive-In, redefined popular rock music at the end of the last decade. Since that time, in addition to being both a solo artist and leader/composer/producer of the The Mars Volta, Rodriguez Lopez has produced groundbreaking recordings for the likes of Juliette Lewis, Le Butcherettes and collaborated with Hans Zimmer, John Frusciante, and Erykah Badu, to name a few. In the early years of the new millennium, Rodriguez Lopez began filmmaking, familiarizing himself with the process by way of producing two unreleased films (2001’s A Manual Dexterity and 2003’s Letters from Dystopia) in lieu of any formal training. His third film, The Sentimental Engine Slayer, is the director’s debut feature release. Despite a virtually continuous commitment to the process of recording and touring with his various bands, Rodriguez Lopez has managed to complete two more films since principal production on The Sentimental Engine Slayer wrapped in 2007; El Divino Influjo De Los Secretos and Boiling Death Request are both currently in post-production.

For more information on Omar Rodriguez Lopez's multitude of endeavors, please CLICK HERE.

Telesterion will be available everywhere on Record Store Day, April 16th, 2011 via Rodriguez Lopez Productions / Sargent House.

Tera Melos premiere MP3 from forthcoming EP; Co-headlining tour with Marnie Stern Feb-March

"Once in a rare while an album comes along that's so fresh and ingenious it redefines what's possible in a field of music. It's been some time since a trio armed with guitar, drums, bass and vocals have shattered the boundaries of convention and pushed the limits of their instruments and compositions like a graceful tsunami of invention. " -- Exclaim!

"Tera Melos has ferociously explored the outer limits of bizarre time signatures and unhinged thrash since its self-titled 2005 debut. But the band's full-length, Patagonian Rats is more akin to the type of freak-pop perversion dished out by daring pioneers like Devo and The Flaming Lips." -- Wired.com

Sacramento genre-benders Tera Melos premiere a new song today from the forthcoming 6-song EP Zoo Weather and deluxe digital edition of their recently released Patagonian Rats album (both via Sargent House). The track, "Manar The Magic" features a spoken cameo by Mike Watt and is posted courtesy of RCRD LBL HERE.

Tera Melos also announced co-headlining US tour dates with guitar goddess Marnie Stern launching in February. Please see full dates below.

Zoo Weather will be available on February 22nd, 2011 on cassette and digital download. The EP features 3 new songs and 3 remixed tracks (including a remix by Japanese noise legends Melt Banana). Patagonian Rats landed on many Best of 2010 lists, as well as receiving raves from Wired.com, Exclaim!, ALARM Press, Impose and Exploding In Sound. L.A. indie-pop darlings ROBOTANISTS reveal tracklist and art for new album, RCRD LBL premieres first single.

"Robotanists root around in the electro-noir explored by Mazzy Star and Portishead, with Ellquist's sultry voice narrating the way through forays into the dark both metaphorical and literal. Their penchant for the atmospheric never becomes an overbearing aesthetic, though - you can take the title of one of their songs, 'Subtlety Is Underrated,' seriously." -- Kevin Bronson, Buzz Bands

Los Angeles' glamorous indie-pop group ROBOTANISTS have released the first single from their forthcoming new album, Plans In Progress, produced by Danny Kalb (Beck, Karen O, Feist). RCRD LBL posted the premiere of the song, "On/Off The Ledge" today, which is available HERE

The quartet, often compared to Florence + The Machine, Jenny Lewis, The Xx, et al., have also revealed the track listing and artwork for Plans in Progress. The CD/digital release will be available via Overhead Records on February 15th, 2011.

ROBOTANISTS headline a residency at the Silverlake Lounge in Los Angeles throughout February as well as play several shows at the South By Southwest Festival in Austin, TX in March. Please see current dates below.

While waiting for the new album and live dates, check out songs from ROBOTANISTS' previous releases: "Wait A Minute Here" (MP3) (VIDEO) from Close Down The Woods and their brilliant reworking of the Jay-Z hit, "Empire State of Mind" as "Exiled State of Mind" (MP3) (VIDEO) from the Shapes and Variations covers project. Stream/download complete albums via Bandcamp HERE.

Comprised of songwriters Sarah Ellquist (vocals & keys) and Daniel DeBlanke (guitar, keys) and rhythm section Keith Boyarsky (bass) and Preston Scott Phillips (drums), ROBOTANISTS have spent the past couple of years spreading their big choruses and delicate prose across North America on tour and on the radio. Their breakthrough single "Wait a Minute Here" (from the band's 2008 debut, Close Down The Woods) topped charts in Los Angeles (KCRW, KROQ) and other major cities across the US. "Subtlety is Underrated" was recently featured in a particularly provocative striptease scene on the 2011 season premiere of the MTV hit reality show, The Jersey Shore

The group's latest effort further expands its lush and lulling sound with contributions from Brad Breek (The Mae Shi, Skull Tape) who added analog synth throughout.

The sound of a parallel universe: Irish trio Adebisi Shank to make U.S. debut in March

"Easily one of the best records of the year. 10/10" -- The 405
"This is a raucous, fun ride which you’ll want to be a part of. 9/10" -- Rock Sound
“Baffling, terrifying and utterly riveting.” -- NME
"Top 5 Best New Irish Bands" -- The Daily Telegraph

Ireland's highly-praised breakout trio, Adebisi Shank have signed to Sargent House for worldwide management and North American release of their critically-acclaimed recent release, This Is the Second Album of a Band Called Adebisi Shank in March 2011. The band also makes its U.S. live debut during the South By Southwest music festival at the Sargent House showcase that month. More details on the live show will be available soon.

Check out the lead MP3s, "International Dreambeat" HERE and "Genki Shank" HERE. Or, stream the full album HERE. Watch live videos for "International Dreambeat" HERE and "Masa" HERE

Imagine it's 1985 and you're making a movie that takes place in 2011. You picture myriad technological devices that simplify our lives -- every mundane activity can be accomplished with the push of a button -- freeing us to travel the globe, living a life of total awesomeness. The anthemic optimism of your era, you assume, will eventually enrich the entire world and create a global new form of music. This Is the Second Album of a Band Called Adebisi Shank is just the type of futuristic-utopian sound of a parallel 2011 universe breaking through the time-space continuum to guide us all to perfection.

The Wexford, Ireland trio deftly merges the triumphant guitar harmonies of Fang Island with the mathematic precision of Battles, the genre-surfing playfulness of Daft Punk and churning intensity of HEALTH. But it's much more than the sum of those parts, it's a sound befitting of the retrofuturism we've come to love about old films where archaic technology collide with far more further-reaching ideas. To wit, the album cover depicting two zebras galloping across a Tron-style neon landscape perfectly embodies the transcendent intersection of triumphant guitars and rollicking drums with vintage synthesizers, marimbas, horns, vocoder, synthesizers, ensemble percussion and musical instruments we're not sure have even been invented yet.

Adebisi Shank has been doted on by Irish, European and UK press since its 2007 debut EP, 2008 full length and the 2010 Irish release of This Is the Second Album of a Band Called Adebisi Shank -- which topped countless Year-End Best of 2010 lists and named by Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper one of the Top Five Best New Irish Bands. US label and management company Sargent House has signed Adebisi Shank for worldwide management and will release the album in North America on March 15th, 2011. The album was previously issued in Ireland/UK by equally likeminded and groundbreaking DIY Irish label Richter Collective (co-founded and co-operated by Adebisi Shank drummer, Mick Roe) in 2010.

This is the Second Album of a Band Called Adebisi Shank features contributions from Mercury Prize nominated Villagers frontman Conor J O'Brien and Ireland's Choice Prize winner Richie “Jape” Egan among others. The album was recorded and produced by the band and Stephen J. Caffrey in various locations around Ireland and mixed and mastered by TJ Lipple at his home in Washington DC. The trio's debut full length, This is the Album of a Band Called Adebisi Shank was produced by legendary musician (Jawbox, Government Issue) and producer (Jawbreaker, Dismemberment Plan) J. Robbins

“On the first album, our mission was get in, tear it up, get out," explains bassist Vin. “The whole thing is over in about 24 minutes, which is really cool, but this time we wanted to make something that you could really spend a bit of time with, get a bit lost in. This one's 40 minutes, which might not sound a lot, but to us that is almost like a double album. There's a real sense of geography to the songs, you can really feel the places we've been and to an extent, the people we've met as we've travelled around. It seemed to make sense to bring in as many of our friends as we could to give the album the party vibe we felt it deserved.” He continues, “It's a big glorious mess.”

Adebisi Shank have gained considerable reputation for their explosive and energetic live performances; NME describing it as,“baffling, terrifying and utterly riveting” and Rock Sound exclaiming the band are "one of the most exciting live bands in Ireland right now.”
