Atmosphere and layering are the cornerstone of Pennsylvania's post-rock maximalists The Depth Beneath Us. Particularly on their forthcoming sophomore album Descent, the quintet finds captivating new ways to build symphonic guitar layers to create wide open, soaring sonic spaces. But the band also deftly combines this with post-metal structures, progressive melodies and emotive songwriting to make sweeping songs that build truly orchestral passages and crescendos.

Add to that Battles' dissection of electronic music, Russian Circles' dramatic metallic guitars, and punchy rhythms, and one can get a sense of this epic masterwork.

Descent is their new ten-song, 55-minute full length. From the pummeling opening riffs of “Trust Thermocline” to the time-twisting rhythms of the title track, it's clear that their increased ambition has paid dividends without compromising an ability to craft intricate and memorable songs.

The band reveals that the new sequence of material was carefully designed to illustrate a journey through the universal experience of conflict in its many forms. “Everywhere you look, there is a nearly unprecedented level of oppression and antagonism in the world now,” guitarist Matt Rockman reflects. “We tried to hold these experiences of conflict in mind while writing, whether societal, interpersonal, or romantic.”

Never content to remain in one mode for too long, the album also highlights how one tries to reconcile such pervasive conflict. “Some turn to diversions and distraction, others look to external adventures, and a few turn their focus inward towards meditation and reflection,” Rockman adds. The album concludes with a note of hope while remaining soberingly aware that regardless of how we navigate these challenges, people have historically been unable to put aside their differences for long.

Descent was recorded by Michael Washkevich at MDW Productions in Harrisburg, PA. The album was mixed by Steve Durose (Oceansize, Vennart, Amplifier). Frank Arkwright provided mastering at Abbey Road Studios.

Descent is available on LP, CD and download on August 1st. Orders are available HERE

Luigi Porto (Manicburg, noir-rock composer) shares video & single "Gabor '25"

"Music that feels like it is remembering something that you forgot... Channeling an operatic garage rock. " -- It's Psychedelic Baby! Magazine

NYC noir-rock composer Luigi Porto shares the official video for his new single "Gabor '25" today via It's Psychedelic Baby! Magazine and Side-Line. The epic near 9-minute song is based on a tragic true story from Porto's family history. Watch the video and read about it HERE. (Direct YouTube.) Hear/share "Gabor '25" on all DSPs HERE.

Legendary composer Angelo Badalamenti praises Porto’s work as “abstract, hypnotizing, absolutely unique,” and Stuart Maconie highlights its “incredibly striking atmospheres.”

Based on a song first heard on his 2021 album, Tell Uric, originally sung by Swedish chanteuse Nefer Alexandra Linde, Gabor returns in 2025 with Porto himself at the microphone, backed by his powerhouse band IDRA. Recorded live in an Italian studio, this performance shapes a chanson into a hard rock odyssey sung in English and French, bursting with lush harmonies, unexpected turns, and a finale that spirals into a psychedelic descent into a hell that tastes like free-jazz - stretching the song and the listener beyond the ordinary in a retro fashion.

A TRUE STORY: Drawn from Porto’s own family history, “Gabor '25” is a tale of identity lost and secrets kept. A newborn girl, sold by her poor parents to a childless couple, grows up in privilege, never knowing her real name or origins. Beautiful and willful, her whims set fate in motion – one summer day a simple request leads to the tragical death of her dad, and the rest of her life unfolds in the shadow of secrets never spoken. She eventually dies young too, her true identity lost to time.

The concept of descent, as an unavoidable fate for those who dare to escalate their class, was in fact the philosophical core of Porto's latest album Tell Uric, from which the song originates, and whose artwork was an arrow facing downwards.

THE VIDEO: Clocking in at over nine minutes, it is a visual and emotional journey, a tapestry of sound and vision through reality and abstraction. Alongside authentic family films and photographs, the narrative is brought to life through a series of animated paintings stemming from the original works of the Italian painter Giovanni Manganaro, that infuse the story with their physicality and abstract weight, swirling and transforming onscreen, blurring the lines between memory and myth and inviting viewers to witness a life both extraordinary and heartbreakingly anonymous.

Luigi Porto, known for his cinematic soundscapes and bold approach to music, brings his

signature blend of rawness and elegance to “Gabor '25.” After having been a favorite of Porto’s live exhibitions, performed in several forms from acoustic to full band, this definitive version loads an intense elegy with the controlled but primordial energy of a live studio recording.

A twisted rock chanson for the forgotten and the unforgettable, that is as relentless as it is atmospheric, blending the visceral punch of psychedelia with a dark approach and an otherworldly sprawl that is the brainchild of stoner and jazz.

Hailing from the Italian underground and experimental scene, Luigi Porto has released albums under several monikers (Appleyard College, Mond), and toured with bands (Maisie, Anima Virus), scored films (Uljhan, Arbëria), and composed for orchestra and stage. Besides performing solo and with ensembles, his music has been at Carnegie Hall, La Croisette, Stanislavsky Theatre and many international venues.
