Accomplished singer/composer Lisa Papineau branches out with new album, Red Trees

Press Release
March 9th, 2010

Accomplished singer/composer Lisa Papineau branches out with new album, Red Trees

"Ms. Papineau's music... clearly shines through on this debut solo disc from the Air and M83 guest vocalist. Softly hewn vocals, combined with synth elements and computer bass echo those of Mia Doi Todd or other post-post-modern stream-of-consciousness songstresses caught up in the technological flow." -- XLR8R

"Papineau uses the spare arrangements to deliver endearingly optimistic performances.... Reveals a deep love for continental pop and world music without ever sounding precious or overly labored." -- Magnet

"She is pouring out her bleeding heart and holding it right out to you." -- Venus

The highly-accomplished singer/composer Lisa Papineau releases her Sargent House debut, Red Trees this spring. The album is the second solo venture from the active collaborator known for her vocal contributions to Air and M83, as well as writing with The Mars Volta bassist Juan Alderete de la Peña in Big Sir. The ever-active Papineau also works with soundtrack composer Tyler Bates, Japanese artist Jun Miyake, The Anubian Lights, Bron Tieman's Crooked Cowboy and countless other projects. Red Trees was recorded with French musicans Matthieu Lesenechal and Johan Guidou, and features guest vocals from singer/songwriters Matthieu Boogaerts and Mark Eitzel of American Music Club.

Listen to the MP3 for "White Leather Pants" HERE.

Remarkably, contending with multiple sclerosis in recent years hasn't slowed down Papineau's creative output. Having relocated to France in the middle of the last decade, the myriad challenges she confronted served as inspiration to her muse. "Since I got sick," she explains, "there have been times when I can’t speak, can’t see very well, can’t walk well, and am in pain that is so singular, there is no thinking that goes along with it, just being. It reminded me a little bit of what it was like when I first moved to France, of the very tunnel-like feeling I had not understanding most of what was being said, not being able to communicate in the flow in which I was normally accustomed. One leans harder into the connections with other people when you can’t take the modes of expression for granted."

That sense of vulnerability helped inspire the sound and semi-lyrical approach of Red Trees. "I wanted to take a little leap off," Papineau says. "Something that felt more like being a newcomer who doesn’t yet have the local language, or the person who struggles to get his tongue to work."

Beginning in multimedia performance art, Papineau's career has been filled with countless highlights. To see her entire bio of accomplishments, click HERE. She relocated to Los Angeles from the east coast and soon began a collaboration with the composer Tyler Bates (soundtrack composer for Watchmen, 300). The project was lovingly dubbed Pet. Coming to the attention of Tori Amos and her manager/ collaborator Arthur Spivak, Pet was the first signing to their imprint label with Atlantic Records, Igloo. After considerable touring, critical acclaim and appearances on the soundtrack of The Crow II and, on the Rock For Choice benefit album Spirit of 73, Pet split up.

Papineau and Alderete formed Big Sir in ensuing months, issuing its self-titled debut album and a remix disc in 2000 and 2001 respectively. During this time, the two musicians continued their collaborations with other artists. Papineau lent her vocals to such diverse projects as the last two Air albums (10,000 Khertz, Talkie Walkie), P.O.D’s The Fundamental Elements of Southtown, Scapegoat Wax’s Okeeblow, Farflung’s Belief Module and NinePin Body, and the Dimension Mix tribute album to electronic sound pioneer Bruce Haack (featuring Beck, Stereolab, Eels, etc.) with The Anubian Lights, while also rocking synths and mic for a Japanese tour of The Rentals. In 2005, Papineau sang two tracks on the M83 Before the Dawn Heals Us release.

Around that time, Papineau moved to Paris and there, began to write the songs that were to be the body of her first solo album Night Moves. The album made its debut in the USA in July 2006, on LunaticWorks (Sony/BMG). Back and forth between France and the US, the past few years have found Papineau hard at work on several projects, and spending a good deal of time on the road performing live. In 2007, Big Sir released Und Die Scheiße Ändert Sich Immer via Gold Standard Labs.

The song “Rene Thomas” from Red Trees was included on Brownswood Recording’s Brownswood Bubblers 4, the latest album in the compilation series assembled by BBC DJ Gilles Peterson to present his newest musical discoveries. In March 2009, she appeared performing ambient vocals on the Tyler Bates score soundtrack of the film Watchmen. Now writing and recording for the newest Big Sir album, Papineau has also begun to create material for new collaborations with Jun Miyake, Tyler Bates, Matt Embree and her own newest solo album.

Red Trees will be released May 4th, 2010 on Sargent House.

The Mars Volta sibling band Zechs Marquise hits the road and studio

The Mars Volta sibling band Zechs Marquise hits the road once again today, supporting RX Bandits on a lengthy North American tour. The El Paso quartet featuring Mars Volta multi-instrumentalist Marcel Rodriguez-Lopez and his bassist brother Marfred Rodriguez-Lopez has toured almost incessantly since the August 2009 release of its debut album Our Delicate Stranded Nightmare via the label of the pair's elder hermano Omar's Rodriguez Lopez Productions. See complete tour dates below.

In the limited time since its winter 2009 tour, Zechs Marquise has been hard at work recording its followup album in El Paso, TX. The yet-untitled disc is expected out in Fall 2010.

Click the links to check out MP3s for "Chase Scene" and "Sirenum Scopuli" from Our Delicate Stranded Nightmare.

Zechs Marquise formed in El Paso, Texas during the spring of 2003 when brothers Marfred and Marcel Rodriguez-Lopez came together with childhood friends Matthew Wilkson and Marcos Smith. The group soon named itself after a popular Japanese anime character and hit the studio to record its first album during the late summer months of 2004. That studio effort was later scrapped and in June 2006 the band instead released 34:26, a live improvised set that showed its great range of talents and influences. By fall of 2006, Zechs was touring the west coast consistently, sharing the stage with such eclectic acts as Daedelus, Busdriver, The Album Leaf, (DJ) Nobody, Daddy Kev, The Gaslamp Killer, and Totimoshi.

July 2007 saw the band return to the recording studio. Having learned from the difficulties of their first attempt, the quintet decided to keep all of the recording in house, purchasing a mixing board, microphones, and Pro Tools in order to track all of the recordings themselves. After a few days in their studios, dubbed Castle Greyskull and El Morro, the members realized they had enough material for a full length album. The record, Our Delicate Stranded Nightmare, was completed in February 2008.

Zechs Marquise then spent time on the road, auspiciously touring with Free Moral Agents & Blank Blue. In March 2009, the band made its first venture overseas to Europe, opening for the Omar Rodriguez-Lopez Group, in which Marcel -- then performing double duty -- is also a player. During the overseas tour, Our Delicate Stranded Nightmare was released in Europe by RLP/Willie Anderson Recordings on CD as well as the first pressing of the album on vinyl. Since that time, the group toured extensively throughout North America with RX Bandits and Mars Volta's Grammy Award winning keyboardist Ikey Owens' group Free Moral Agents.

In May 2009, Zechs Marquise signed on to the prestigious management roster at Sargent House and released Our Delicate Stranded Nightmare in the U.S. on vinyl and CD on August 25th through Rodriguez Lopez Productions.

Austin instrumentalists My Education compose original score for F.W. Murnau's 1927 masterpiece, Sunrise

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
March 8th, 2010

Austin instrumentalists My Education compose original score for F.W. Murnau's 1927 masterpiece, Sunrise;

Rolling Stone "surprise find"band to tour accompanying film

"There must be something on the air, or in it, to explain the space rock blooming in central Texas. This Austin sextet expands on the arc-riff grandeur of local travelers Explosions in the Sky with John Cale-like viola and simple, rising melodies that take you way up and out. My surprise find at SXSW this year, My Education are advanced ecstasy." -- David Fricke, Rolling Stone

Austin, TX instrumentalists My Education have composed an original score for director F.W. Murnau's 1927 silent film classic, "Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans". Parts of the painstakingly composed soundtrack will be released on CD, LP and digital download this spring via Strange Attractors Audio House. The quintet tours this June in support of the album, fittingly titled Sunrise, with live accompaniment to the film at select venues.

Check out "Oars", the first MP3 from Sunrise HERE.

For the past ten years, Austin, TX instrumentalists My Education have splashed their cinematic sound all over the great silver screen that is the Central Texas sky, painting their stories using feedback-laden guitars, swirling melodic viola, rhythm section storm clouds, and flourishes of vibraphone, bells, strings and horns. Claiming five full-length albums, a 12" vinyl collaboration with avant-hip hop duo Dalek, remixes by members of like-minded bands Kinski, Pelican, Red Sparowes, and A Place to Bury Strangers, and several singles and compilation appearances, My Education have cultivated a loyal underground following.

The band spent most of 2009 working tirelessly on the follow-up to their previous acclaimed LP, Bad Vibrations (Strange Attractors, 2008). Tucked away in the studio, they have captured a calamitous but oddly compelling tension, building to a crescendo of pure ecstasy with their latest and greatest triumph, Sunrise.

Comprised of pieces from the band's original score for Murnau's silent masterpiece, My Education has discovered the perfect forum for which to flex their compositional muscles, achieving ever-transcendent musical heights in the process. This original score was perfected over the last two years through live scoring to the film, performed at sold out shows from coast-to-coast throughout the USA. Just as the music provides new context to the film as a live accompaniment, Sunrise flashes brightly from the speakers, sparking vivid and lush imagery for the listener. Finding parallels to the timeless soundtracks-as-albums Popol Vuh composed for a number of Werner Herzog's films - music with such visual distinction that it went on to become both synonymous with the screen and the band's legacy - Sunrise leaps onto celluloid with confident grace, distinguishing itself as My Education's most diverse and mature release yet.

Recorded byThe Bump Boyz at Headbump Studios, Austin, TX. Mixed by Jason Buntz & Chris "Frenchie" Smith at Bubble, Austin, TX. Sunrise hits stores on April 27, 2010.

My Education live:

Mr. Gnome announces spring tour dates, new EP recorded at Josh Homme's studio

Mr. Gnome announces spring tour dates, new EP recorded at Josh Homme's studio

"Even better than their last album, which I loved. Sounds like ethereal icelandic fairies being pummeled by concrete guitars in a dirty Cleveland parking lot. AKA: awesome." 'Eight Criminally Underrated Albums of 2009' -- Paste Magazine

"The Rollicking 'Plastic Shadow' is a rust bucket rocker that Cat Power should have recorded, and 'Pixie Dust' glitters like some lost 4AD band from 1988: light as a feather, but heavy enough to weaken the knees, much like the album as a whole." -- Bust Magazine

"The awesome rush of sound that comes out of Nicole Barile's lungs and guitar and Sam Meister's drums seems much bigger and more powerful than anything two people are capable of. Mr. Gnome don't really sound like anyone else, and their ghost-ridden songs only make sense with a dreamtime logic." -- LA Weekly

Critically-praised Cleveland duo Mr. Gnome has announced U.S. tour dates beginning in March in support of a new EP due out later this month. The EP, titled Tastes Like Magic will be released on vinyl and digital download on March 16th. The new songs were recorded at Josh Homme's (QOTSA, Them Crooked Vultures) Pink Duck Studios in Los Angeles, where Mr. Gnome also recorded its recent album, Heave Yer Skeleton.

Check out an MP3 for the lead track, "Three Red Birds" from Tastes Like Magic HERE. The band has also released a third song from its latest full-length, Heave Yer Skeleton -- the swooning "Plastic Shadow" is available HERE.

Chan "Cat Power" Marshall fronting Queens of the Stone Age? Karen O leading Death From Above 1979? Cleveland duo Mr. Gnome has been given many unusual comparisons, all of which seem to indicate the band's spectacularly unique sound. And, while none seem to fully capture the band's loftily heavy-beautiful music, Mr. Gnome continues to captivate and inspire writers and audiences alike. The band's stunning performance video for "Spain" is a perfect example. Watch HERE.

Upon completing recording in Los Angeles, the endlessly touring pair of guitarist/vocalist Nicole Barile and drummer/vocalist Sam Meister mixed the tracks at Butch Vig's Smart Studios in Madison, WI with Beau Sorenson (Death Cab For Cutie, Sparklehorse, The Secret Machines, Garbage, Tegan and Sara). Extending and experimenting on elements only touched on in their first full-length, Mr. Gnome’s Heave Yer Skeleton was released on November 10th, 2009 via El Marko Records.

Fang Island announces U.S. tour dates, new van is stolen

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
March 1st, 2010

Fang Island announces U.S. tour dates, new van is stolen

"If this is the arena rock of the future, send me an invite, okay?" -- Pitchfork

"A triumphant, heavily riffed, primarily instrumental epic, whiplashing through six minutes of smiling prog jams, and as many tempos as passages, before settling into one last minute of uplifting chants." -- Stereogum
"Marries complex math-rock with a life-affirming energy that could soundtrack the next Spike Jonze film." – Examiner.com

Just days after Fang Island purchased a new van to transport the Brooklyn anthemic guitar quintet on a slew of U.S. tour dates starting this month, the vehicle was stolen. However, undeterred the eternally-optimistic band will continue with all upcoming tour dates and is attempting to raise funds for a replacement via its online merch outlet and "pay what you want" digital store. The band whose sound is described as "everyone high-fiving everyone" may want to add, "…except thieves."

Fang Island supports The Chinese Stars on dates surrounding both bands' SXSW performances. Then, again hit the road supporting Red Sparowes in April. Please see complete tour dates below.

Fang Island's self-titled debut album hit shelves on February 23rd via Sargent House amid a wealth of praise from press, with many writers declaring it one of the Best of 2010, just two months into the new year. Amazon.com is currently offering an exclusive MP3 album version for $5.99 with the bonus track, "Patterns On The Wall." A digital EP featuring the popular album track "Daisy" backed with Chris Keating of Yeasayer's remix of "Absolute Place" off their Sky Gardens EP preceded the full length in January.

Back in December, Pitchfork debuted the quirky video for "Daisy" directed by Carlos Charlie Perez (Li'l Wayne, Vampire Weekend). Watch it HERE. A new clip, also directed by Perez, for the song "Life Coach" is expected out this week.

Its finger-tapping guitar lines, chanted vocals, triumphant harmonies and overall perky songs hearken to the sort of "Total Music" of the Jay Reatard, Ponytail, Kraftwerk, Marnie Stern, Thin Lizzy, et al. But, perhaps more so, its songs are like the music in your head at that moment when everything feels just right: that first kiss, that high score on the video game, buying your first small nation in cash... you know, good stuff. Check out MP3s for two tracks, "Daisy" (MP3 HERE) and "Life Coach" (MP3 HERE).

Fang Island began, oddly enough, as an art school project while the band members were attending the prodigious Rhode Island School of Design (also the foundation for Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Les Savvy Fav, Six Finger Satellite, Lightning Bolt and some band called the Talking Heads.) According to guitarist Jason Bartell, the goal was to "make music for people who like music." That is, music without irony that harnesses its uplifting qualities. Just like a classic rock song or classical symphony can stir us emotionally, Fang Island exists to unlock that spirit.

Fang Island is guitarist Jason Bartell, bassist Michael Jacober, guitarist Chris Georges, guitarist Nicholas Andrew Sadler, and drummer Marc St. Sauveur. They all share collective group vocal harmonies and the occasional hand claps. While Sadler is also known for his role in the debauched rock band Daughters, it is only his fretboard skill that translates between the two groups.
