Pink Frost share video featuring evil Black Metal elders, currently recording new album at Electrical Audio

"An increasingly commanding quartet that embraces the power of guitar drone, tribal drum and the deep, shoegaze-era swoon." -- Chicago Tribune

"Off-kilter, yearning rock music that strives for a populism that's considered a bit declassé by most of their peers and, as such, badly missed." -- Pitchfork

Chicago quartet Pink Frost premiere a haunting new video today via Brooklyn Vegan. The clip for the song "Traitors" is available to watch and share HERE. (Direct YouTube HERE.)

Pink Frost is currently in the studio at Steve Albini's legendary Electrical Audio in Chicago putting the finishing touches on a new album (their third.) Engineer Gregoire Yeche, who helmed the band's recent Traitors EP and their 2013 full length Sundowning at Electrical Audio, is once again at the controls. The band has been posting photos and videos of the recording process to their Instagram account.

Guitarist/vocalist Adam Lukas had this to say about the new recording:

"Going back to Electrical this time felt like going home. We knew what to expect and what worked previously and what we could improve upon. We brought an insane amount of gear. Paige and I were running a couple of full stacks in the main live room. The sound was so epically loud it was hard not to be inspired."

Pink Frost's new album is planned for release in winter 2015/2016, with a special release this Fall to be announced soon. Traitors EP is streaming in full HERE. (All tracks cleared for posting.)

Jad Fair & Jason Willett of Half Japanese share new track from forthcoming album

“If the old adage is true and all of Fair’s songs are either about monsters or love, this one could be one of his first that’s about both, offering goofy depictions of the downfall of our planet paired with a surprisingly maudlin air for the indie rock goofball.” — SPIN

Jad Fair and Jason Willett of legendary art-punk band Half Japanese premiere a new track from their forthcoming album as a duo today via SPIN. The song "Mars Invaded Earth" is available to hear and share HERE. (Direct Soundcloud HERE.)

Consequence of Sound recently shared the album title track "The Greatest Power", available to hear and share HERE.

See track listing and cover art below. The 18-track album sees the longtime bandmates return hot on the heels of Half Japanese’s 2014 album Overjoyed, which was the band's first recording in over 13 years.

In keeping with Half Japanese’s tradition of all songs being “either love songs or monster songs,” Jad & Jason’s latest effort vacillates between these lyrical themes throughout with Fair on vocals and “occasional instruments” (mostly guitar) and Willett on “other instruments.” Drag City artist Michael Evans plays drums on title track “The Greatest Power.”

In 1974, with his brother David, Jad Fair co-founded the lo-fi alternative rock group Half Japanese. Over the ensuing three decades, Half Japanese released nearly 30 records, and in the process, attracted a solid base of fans passionate about the band’s pure, unbridled enthusiasm for rock and roll. Jad also performs and records as a solo artist, and occasionally collaborates with such musicians as Daniel Johnston, Danielson, Teenage Fanclub, Moe Tucker (of Velvet Underground), Yo La Tengo, Steve Shelly and Thurston Moore (of Sonic Youth), John Zorn, Kramer, and more.

The Greatest Power will be available on LP and download on September 8th, 2015 via Dymaxion Groove Records. Pre-orders are available HERE

Sons of Huns album out today & streaming in full, Portland trio w/ Danava guitarist feature guests Wino Weinrich (St. Vitus) and Dale Crover (Melvins) on sophomore LP

"Fans of old-school Metallica take note: This one is a thrashy riff-fest in the vein of Kill 'Em All - with a few surprises of its own...What opens like a standard, straight-ahead thrasher ends in a flourish of complex syncopations and chord-change wizardry - a testament to Sons of Huns’ diverse songcraft and musicianship." -- Consequence of Sound

“The Portland trio blend oddball retro doom, driving stoner rock, grimy thrash and a dash of NWOBHM to create a heady, intoxicating brew. Imagine combining the best elements of Saviours, Danava and Fu Manchu for maximum hard-rocking effect.” — The Sludgelord

Portland trio Sons of Huns sophomore album is available everywhere today. Hear and share the full album via Soundcloud HERE.)

Noisey previously launched the song "An Evil Unseen" which features special guest Scott 'Wino" Weinrich (St. Vitus) singing duet with Sons of Huns vocalist/guitarist Pete Hughes (also of Danava). While Sleeping Stay Awake, the sophomore album by Sons of Huns was recorded in Los Angeles by engineer Toshi Kasai (Tool, Melvins) and will be released July 21st via RidingEasy Records

The quest for truth can lead to many different places. One door shuts, another door opens. One path dead ends, while another path widens. Life can often be akin to that proverbial rabbit hole, spiraling through options only to be left asking, “Why?” Sons of Huns explore some of the universe’s biggest questions on their second full-length album for RidingEasy Records. This journey commenced for singer and guitarist Pete Hughes under the most unpleasant of circumstances-to say the least.

“I got bit by a damned bacteria-ridden tick in the Virginia woods when I was a teen,” he sighs. “I got Lyme Disease, among other things, leaving me now 16 years later with chronic pain and illness and searching for answers to questions that no one seems to have answers for. That’s at the heart of While Sleeping Stay Awake. Its themes include Raja Yoga, meditation, Egyptian magic, occult and Hermetic philosophy, our connection with the stars and cycles of life, death, and rebirth.”

The trio rounded out by Ryan Northrop [drums] and Aaron Powell [bass, vocals] retreated to Kasai's Sound of Sirens Studio for a week in January 2015. During that time, the group honed its robust rock sound with the right flourishes of spacey elegance and artful bombast. "We’re a heavy rock band, no frills, we turn up and let it rip,” he adds. “Playing this music is cathartic, and we hope this album captured that.”
In 2013, Banishment Ritual announced the arrival of Sons of Huns. They shared the stage with everybody from Kadavar and Pentagram to the mighty St. Vitus, while earning acclaim from tastemakers like CVLT Nation, The Sludgelord, and Decibel Magazine who described them as, “Rampaging garage rock with plenty of stoner/psychedelic inclinations.”

While Sleeping Stay Awake will be available on LP, CD and download via RidingEasy Records on July 21st, 2015. Pre-orders for LP/CD (HERE) and download (HERE).

Austin jazz-rock/indie pop/blue-eyed soul band Wonderbitch share new song from forthcoming release

"Wonderbitch has created a fascinating little hybrid for themselves, blending the sleek jazz rock of Steely Dan, the effervescent indie pop of Phoenix, along with a big, wonderfully garish helping of ‘80s R&B." -- PopMatters

"50 Best Things We Saw at SXSW 2015." -- RollingStone

Austin, TX power-pop/jazz rock/80s R&B genre-splicing quartet Wonderbitch share a new track today from their forthcoming sophomore release. The hook-loaded song "Little Tiger" is available to hear & share via the band's Soundcloud HERE.

PopMatters recently premiered the effervescent first single "Josanna", available to hear & share HERE. (Direct Soundcloud link HERE.)

The band's self-titled sophomore release is out on CD and digital on July 24th. Their 7-song debut Wonderbitch Loves You was released in summer 2013.

In the winter of 2013, Wonderbitch sprouted from a fertile galaxy of childhood friends and stagnant basement projects in the small, musical town of Bloomington, Indiana. After creating a remarkably lush and groovy bedroom debut album with themes of unconditional love, sex, and healing, the band transplanted to Austin to hone their chops and to always have a stage to play on. Upon arrival, Wonderbitch picked up two Texan boys with a propensity towards rocking out, doubling the drive to grow and play on an increasing scale.

On top of a moody English foundation of Pink Floyd, Genesis and Muse, Wonderbitch wraps up cool Steely Dan musicality, Texas psychedelia, video games, and the nostalgic sparkle of smooth early 80s pop. Wonderbitch currently writes, records and performs regionally and nationally as they continue to cultivate their show into a lovingly explosive and enveloping experience to bring to stages large and medium.

Birch introduce "knockout song" with "fantastic, stylish" video from forthcoming debut

Click image above to watch video

"Contagious, well-rounded indie rock. What better way for a new band to introduce themselves than with a well-made video for a knockout song?" -- PopMatters

"Fantastic!" -- Pancakes & Whiskey

Brooklyn, NY group Birch premiere the first video from their forthcoming debut today via PopMatters. The clip for the incredibly contagious first single "Halfway" is available to watch and share HERE. (Direct YouTube HERE.)

Birch is the project of singer/songwriter Michelle Birsky. The band, which includes Mat Towles on bass and Emma Munger on guitar blends elements of rock, pop, singer/songwriter, and electronica, never quite settling on one genre. With ambient electronic instrumentation, lush vocal looping, and unconventional song form, Birch seeks to create a unique, contemporary sound while maintaining the strength and significance of traditional songwriting.

After graduating college with a degree in music composition, Birsky moved to Brooklyn in pursuit of a music community. After working at a commercial music house, music supervising an indie film, and landing an internship with film composer Elliot Goldenthal, Birsky decided to pursue her own music - and thus Birch was born. In August of 2014, she went on a two-week solo, silent retreat to her parent's house in Vermont where she began working on songs for Birch's debut.

Since the writing process began in Vermont, a place Michelle spent most of her childhood, much of the music is centered around the theme of past and present. In fact, the name "Birch" comes from Vermont and is based on three storm-weathered birch trees that sat at the bottom of her family's yard for years, their tops bent nearly to the ground, but never falling over.

The songs themselves are a combination of narrative and emotional storytelling. Each song is based on a specific story, but the lyrics can be elusive at times, triggering emotion rather than a specific narrative. "Halfway", for example, is based on Michelle's time in Vermont and is about the places your mind goes when it is left alone for extended periods of time. "Fighting Words" is an angst-y tribute to her hometown in Connecticut and draws from stories of her peers who grew up with ultra-conservative parents. Throughout the four songs of the EP, there are underlying dichotomies: past vs. present, nature vs. metropolis, acoustic vs. electronic, as well as the underlying theme of growing up in a digital age and what it's like to be young now.

After returning to Brooklyn, Birsky teamed up with producer Ariel Loh from the band Stone Cold Fox to begin recording the EP. Loh helped bring electronic elements into Birch's sound, further highlighting the themes of time and place. Birsky had multiple musicians play on the recordings and live set before current guitarist Emma Munger and bassist Mat Towles joined the band. Having gone to college with Emma and met Mat when she first moved to Brooklyn, Birsky continues its basis as a personal endeavor, expanding slowly in the world at large.

Birch's 4-song debut, Halfway will be available for download on August 28th, 2015.
