Suspirians - Austin hypnotic trio w/ members Roky Erickson band & ST37 - premiere first track from upcoming album via Clrvynt

"40 minutes' worth of feedback-drenched, brain-melting rock that straddles the line between the Stooges' impatient punk and Roky Erickson's heady jams." -- Clrvynt

Austin trio Suspirians premiere the first song from their forthcoming sophomore album today via Clrvynt. The band's latest work explores an hypnotic and catchy convergence of psych, punk and experimental rock. Hear and share "Nocturne" HERE. (Direct Soundcloud.)

Rock music, when done right, will always take us into a netherworld that we never knew existed, but we always somehow felt was within ourselves. The cosmos of inescapable rhythm, in-your-face melody and words, all speak simple truths that perhaps we couldn't speak for ourselves. Austin, TX trio Suspirians summons that netherworld with their sophomore album Ti Bon Ange.

The album title is taken from a Haitian voodoo term that translates literally to "little good angel" - the part of one's soul that holds one's individuality and personal qualities, which leaves the body when sleeping so you can dream. It's a title quite befitting of the experience listening to Ti Bon Ange, where listeners become immersed in a sound, not just casually attending to it.

From the first notes of the album, throughout its 7-song, 40 minute duration it's clear that Suspirians aim to deconstruct rock in a way that's both psychedelic and mysterious as much as it's direct, infectious and powerful. Guitarist/vocalist Marissa Pool, bassist/keyboardist Stephanie Demopulos and drummer Lisa Cameron craft songs that shape-shift from part to part rather than follow traditional verse-chorus-verse structure. It's a wall of guitars and subtle synth layers, vocals drenched in reverb and on the brink of feedback, powerful and open drumming that allows the songs to flow like molten lava without ever sounding lethargic. Points of reference bridge a wide array of psychedelic, punk and experimental sounds: Pylon, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sonic Youth, The Stooges first album, Frightwig, early Butthole Surfers, Roky Erickson & The Aliens, late 70s British post-punk and more.

"We would end up getting lost in the songs together in a sort of epic fever dream," Pool says. "We did not overthink or over control anything on this record. It was all about going with the flow and following our instincts." Suspirians' self-titled debut album - with original drummer Anna Lamphear - was comparatively a more straightforward and garagey affair. Pool and Demopulos began experimenting with their sound soon after and with the addition of Cameron, they collectively found the aesthetic they were after. Cameron's extensive musical history - having played with the legendary Roky Erickson, as well as celebrated Austin psych band ST37 and other improv/noise projects - helped the band expand its vision.

Ti Bon Ange was recorded at 5th Street Studios with engineer Evan Kleinecke, while the band was still navigating their way through the nascent songs. "We had some raw and powerful basic tracks to bounce off of and the rest of the time was just having fun playing really loud and experimenting," Pool says. The results are equally as deliberate and completely free as groundbreaking rock'n'roll should be.

Ti Bon Ange will be available on LP, CD and download on June 9th via Super Secret Records.

L.A. Beat Scene meets electronic, jazz & avant-garde: spoony bard shares new track from forthcoming album

NYC musician spoony bard (lowercase, please) shares a new track from his forthcoming new album Dweeb over at Northern Transmissions. Hear and share "vibe/void" HERE. (Soundcloud or Bandcamp.)

The Spill Magazine recently premiered lead track, "Misgiving" HERE. (Direct Soundcloud.) And, the song was also featured in Bandcamp Weekly HERE.

Like the video game garbled insult of its namesake, spoony bard is the result of a cultural collision as well as an honest and self-deprecating exploration of life. The hybrid of L.A. beat scene, electronic, jazz and avant-garde takes a fresh approach to musical soul-bearing with compelling sonic textures and introspective lyrics. spoony bard combines hints of Flying Lotus, Dalek, DJ Premier, Herbie Hancock, Aphex Twin and more.

spoony bard is the alter-ego of musician David Nord. Originally a jazz composer/guitarist, Nord's equal interest in hip-hop and electronic sounds brought about an evolution in his work, leading him to merge these styles and explore the possibilities of an alternate musical vocabulary.

"Just playing jazz wasn't cutting it anymore," Nord says. "I started hearing the L.A. beat scene type stuff that was coming out and got inspired to really dive deeper into synthesizers, sampling, music software, etc., while also continuing to hone the harmonic and melodic approach that I had developed as a jazz musician."

Dweeb is the 8-song full length debut of spoony bard. The album is filled with delightful instrumental passages like the glitchy organs, tiny piano plinking and diced rhythms of the title track, as well as contemplative sung/rapped passages like, "I'm living with so many misgivings, they weigh me down but I don't care / She once told me that I scare them away, I said well they scare me, but at least I'm not afraid of myself like I used to be." Elsewhere, mellow trip-hop leaning tones and beats turn on a dime into cathartic raps. Throughout, Dweeb is a thoroughly unique and revealing album from an artist unhindered by genres and rules.

Dweeb will be available for download on May 12th via Bandcamp, iTunes, Spotify, Apple Music, etc.

NYC trio Blackout shares new track from upcoming album adding hints of classic Big Apple heft (Cro-Mags, Helmet, Judge) to signature doom

"In a sea of newer-school heavy riffing, Blackout are managing to concoct a sound across the span of The Horse that stands them out. The songwriting and execution... feels like a landmark for them." -- The Obelisk

NYC trio Blackout premiere a new track from their forthcoming album today via The Obelisk. Hear and share "Let 'em Ride" HERE. (Direct Soundcloud.)

CvltNation recently launched first single "Graves" HERE. (Direct Soundcloud).

Ask any New Yorker what makes them special and they’ll all tell you something different. But there’s something very particular about a city so condensed with a vast range of humanity all facing myriad daily challenges that gives its rock music a brash, direct aggression unlike other places. Case in point, NYC trio Blackout’s take on doom and stoner rock is filled with a gritty, mechanistic heft unlike bands of their ilk from anywhere else.

Subsumed within the greasy grooves of The Horse there are echoes of NYC heavy legends like Helmet, Cro-Mags, Judge, Prong and others -- not as intentional homage, but rather a vibe that permeates and inadvertently gives its bands a unique power that few can match.

After a brief hiatus between the March 2015 release of their self-titled sophomore album on RidingEasy Records, Blackout has regrouped and (ahem) gotten back on The Horse for an 8-song blast of riffs that does not fuck around.

On one fateful day in July 2016, with a handful of mushrooms and a bottle of tequila, vocalist/guitarist Christian Gordy set out to write an entire new Blackout record. Following the departure of original drummer Taryn Waldman earlier that year, the band’s fate was uncertain. But, Gordy’s writing forray resulted in a wellspring of inspiration and by happenstance he contacted drummer Adam Taylor who had just parted with his band Ghost Punch. Within two months of banging out riffs with bassist Justin Sherrell, Blackout was back in action.

The Horse was recorded over 4 days in September 2016 at Spaceman Sound in Brooklyn’s Greenpoint neighborhood, which the band describes as “a whirlwind session laced with loads of buds, Petey’s burgers and lipstick.”

Or, described by blackout themselves: “What you have before you now is a messy plate of meat, slathered in weird sauces. A haunted steak from from Centaurus A to sink your dirty fangs into. Sit back, crack a semi cold one, maybe get some snacks... and turn this motherfucker up to 8.”

The Horse will be available on LP, CD and download May 26th, 2017 via RidingEasy Records.

Big Walnuts Yonder: Mike Watt (Minutemen), Nels Cline (Wilco), Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), Nick Reinhart (Tera Melos) stream entire forthcoming album early

"Psychedelic, genre-bending music." -- Stereogum

Big Walnuts Yonder are streaming their forthcoming debut full length ahead of release starting today via Consequence of Sound. Hear and share the full album HERE. (Direct Soundcloud.)

Big Walnuts Yonder is bassist/vocalist Mike Watt (Minutemen, The Stooges), guitarist Nels Cline (Wilco, Nels Cline Singers), drummer Greg Saunier (Deerhoof) and guitarist/vocalist Nick Reinhart (Tera Melos). It is not a supergroup. "It's worlds colliding," says Mike Watt.

Four exceptional musicians whose work spans multiple genres and generations, Big Walnuts Yonder is a monumental endeavor that's more than the sum of its parts. The results are a truly epic album defying categorization, where one might hear elements of proto-punk, free jazz, power pop, experimental music, psych-rock and your first teenage acid trip all in one.

The album was recorded in just 3 days in summer 2014 in Brooklyn, NY with producer and former Pere Ubu bassist Tony Maimone engineering at his Studio G. "It was this concentrated sort of freakout," Saunier says. "We basically had to invent a new band on the spot. And, people might have a stereotype of what each person does, but we all showed up to do what we're prevented from doing in other groups." The band would play through each song a couple of times to make up parts, then hit record. "Nels can improvise with anything," Watt notes. "It was trippy to watch the huge pedal dance! Both those guys have like 35 pedals each. And, Greg's not just a drummer man, he's incredible." The album's 10 tracks were recorded primarily live with very few overdubs. Although Big Walnuts Yonder was created under somewhat spontaneous circumstances, the group endeavored to ensure the album wouldn't sound like a jam session. "It was very clear among us," Saunier notes: "Let's not overindulge and make it a 'musician's recording'."

Asked how he might describe Big Walnuts Yonder, Cline succinctly nails it on the head: "It's sick. It has an extreme quality and kicks ass."

Big Walnuts Yonder features a cover illustration by punk art legend Raymond Pettibon. The album will be available on LP, CD and download on May 5th, 2017 via Sargent House. Physical pre-orders are available at bigwalnutsyonder.hellomerch.com and at iTunes HERE.

Halycine premiere video for acclaimed single "Circles"

"A a hazy and dreamy ballad, which sounds a bit like a torch song fed through a Kevin Shields filter, or some of the more darkly romantic material from Dum Dum Girls." -- Treble

"Spontaneously calling to mind both Bethany Cosentino and Jenny Lewis... comes to life through gutsy guitar lines and soothing vocal harmonies." -- Impose Magazine

NYC band Halycine premiere the video for their acclaimed song "Circles" from their recent debut release today via CultureCreature. The video, directed by singer/guitarist Chloe Raynes, is available to watch and share HERE. (Vimeo or YouTube.)

TrebleZine. recently premiered the clip for "Elixir" HERE. (Direct Vimeo and YouTube.) Impose Magazine recently premiered the video for the dark David Lynch style tale of frenemies, hatred and deceit in "One More Try". Watch and share HERE. (Direct Vimeo & YouTube).

Halycine released their debut, In The Salt in August 2016 and it's available to hear and share on Soundcloud and Bandcamp.

Halycine, the moniker for the solo project of singer/guitarist Chloe Raynes, is a fresh new voice in indie rock. Her debut EP, In The Salt, is a collection of 5 songs that she wrote and produced, and 3 videos that she directed.

Chloe previously co-fronted NYC's rock outfit Blue & Gold before embarking on the new project that would become Halycine. In The Salt is a luscious blend of reverberating guitars and spacious vocals. It's a sonically imaginative and and lyrically vivid collection of deeply affecting songs. The EP was tracked and mixed at The End in Greenpoint, Brooklyn with GG Gonzalez on drums and Derek Cabrera on bass.

After hearing Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" for the first time at 10-years-old, she decided that she had no choice but to pick up the guitar and begin shredding. Her life was forever changed, and she's been playing and writing songs ever since.

Chloe studied music composition at the arctic campus of Bates College in Maine. She managed to get through the long winters with a soundtrack of Liz Phair, Sleater-Kinney, and Sublime. She moved to NYC shortly after graduation, absorbing the sights and sounds that would eventually shape her musical sensibilities. Other musical influences include Dum Dum Girls, St. Vincent, and Jenny Lewis.

Portland art-pop trio Swansea streaming album in full

"Super innovative and ultra catchy. Flaws is unstoppably fun." -- Impose

"Rich, layered, danceable works that continuously evolve off of their initial pivot points. An immediately entrancing cut, 'Gain Their Grace' bursts at the seams with smart turns to keep the grooves and hooks coming on strong not unlike the best Little Dragon has to offer." -- Speak In My Good Eye

"Fun sans guilt -- integrity and attention paid to how they approach synth pop constructs and percussive loops, ear candy that's neither MOR nor disposable." -- Letters From a Tapehead

Portland trio Swansea are streaming their entire sophomore album, Flaws today via Letters From a Tapehead. Hear Flaws in full HERE. And, share via Bandcamp or Soundcloud. All tracks cleared for posting.

TrebleZine recently shared ebullient single "Brighter" HERE, stating, “evokes the pop sensibility of Future Islands with the epic disco pulse of LCD Soundsystem...Increasingly building pop immediacy, big hooks, hypnotic vocals and a melody that sticks around well after the song is over.” The Spill Magazine premiered "Just Like It Used To Be" HERE. Speak In My Good Eye launched "Gain Their Grace" HERE. Impose Magazine kicked off lead track "Red Mittens" HERE.

Swansea formed in 2011 when Portland, Oregon mainstays, musician/actress/writer, Rebecca Sanborn (Loch Lomond, Blue Cranes) and drummer, Ji Tanzer (Blue Cranes, Rebecca Gates) recruited Kansas City multi-instrumentalist/singer Kyleen King to expand the sound of their long standing duo project.

As a trio, in 2012 the group released their first full length album Old Blood and completed multiple tours of the United States. Between 2013-2015, Swansea toured Europe and found significant success in scoring and licensing music for a diverse array of films, including the track & field documentary We Grew Wings (2013), the feature length, multi-award winning dramas Light of Mine (2013), A Standing Still (2014) and Death On A Rock (2015).

With the engineering/production help of John Askew (Neko Case, Wild Flag), Swansea's sophomore album, Flaws is slated for a Spring 2017 release on the Self Group label. Stylistically, Swansea combine artful narrative and atmospheric sweep with a touch of dancey, off-the-cuff toughness, often drawing comparison to LCD Soundsystem, St. Vincent and My Brightest Diamond.

Charming Disaster stream full album ahead of release, East Coast tour continues

"Gothic folk murder balladry, not unlike PJ Harvey at her most ornate. But there's an accessibility and pop sensibility that also nods to the likes of Andrew Bird or Regina Spektor. It's darkness cut with a melodic immediacy, and it's a thing of fanciful beauty." -- Treble

Brooklyn, NY duo Charming Disaster are streaming in full their forthcoming sophomore album Cautionary Tales today at Impose Magazine. Hear and share the dark literary leaning full length HERE. (Direct Soundcloud.)

GhettoBlaster Magazine premiered the third single, "Little Black Bird" this week, available to hear and share HERE. Lead single "Sympathetic Magic" recently launched via TrebleZine HERE. Northern Transmissions previously shared "Snake Bit" HERE.

The band is currently on an East Coast tour in support of the album release. Please see complete dates below. The duo's NYC hometown album release party is April 29th at Hell Phone Speakeasy. Tickets & info HERE.

Charming Disaster is a songwriting and performance duo formed by musicians Ellia Bisker (of Sweet Soubrette and Funkrust Brass Band) and Jeff Morris (of Kotorino) in 2012. Inspired by the gothic humor of Edward Gorey and Tim Burton, the noir storytelling of Raymond Chandler, the stylish aesthetic of French new wave film, the murder ballads of the Americana tradition, and the dramatic flair of the cabaret, they write songs that tell stories - exploring themes like love, death, crime, ancient mythology, and the paranormal.

Their song "Ghost Story" was featured on the podcast Welcome to Night Vale, and they were awarded "best closing credits music" by the 2016 Garden State Film Festival for their song "Right Words to Say" (featured in the short film Mary and Louise). They released their debut album, Love, Crime & Other Trouble, in 2015, and their second album, Cautionary Tales, will be released in spring 2017.

Many of the songs on Cautionary Tales were created in February 2015, when the duo spent two weeks holed up in an isolated cabin in the snowy woods of northern Michigan. Cautionary Tales expands on Charming Disaster's spooky, offbeat universe of paranormal romance, circus and carnival characters, con artists, and Egyptian mythology with new songs of espionage, occult practices, supernatural creatures, and the end of the world as we know it. The album's musical influences include traditional murder ballads, the duo collaborations of PJ Harvey and John Parish, and the folkier side of Led Zeppelin. Charming Disaster's literary bent is also in evidence, with references to cult fantasy novels Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell and The Golden Compass as well as ancient lore from Greek and Norse mythology.

Cautionary Tales will be available on CD and download on April 21st, 2017. Preorders are available via Bandcamp.

Belgian band BRUTUS signs to Sargent House, shares first track from worldwide release of debut album 'Burst'

"A powerful and thrilling blend of punk, rock, indie and hardcore that'll get the teeth in your skull rattling." - NME

"Brutus contribute an intriguing new voice to underground music." -- Rock Sound

"They're in a field of their own... this is one of the albums of the year" (5/5 Ks) -- KERRANG!

Sargent House is proud to announce the addition of Belgian trio Brutus to its management and label roster. Sargent House will soon release the band's debut album Burst in North America and the rest of the world in partnership with Hassle Records, the band's European label. "My reaction was immediate, the second I heard the first track I was hooked and knew I wanted to be part of this band's team," says Cathy Pellow, who also manages such artists as Chelsea Wolfe, Deafheaven, Russian Circles to name just a few.

Metal Injection premieres the first single from the album, "All Along" today, available to hear and share HERE. (Direct Soundcloud.)

Hailing from Leuven, Belgium, Brutus create a pummeling, meteor-shower of sound. Vocalist/drummer Stefanie Mannaerts mixes black-metal blast beats with math-rock flourishes whilst belting out the most impassioned vocals that shift from deceptively melodic to outright larynx-punishing in the blink of an eye. Meanwhile, guitarist Stijn Vanhoegaerden takes ethereal post-rock tones to hardcore punk levels of speed and energy alongside Peter Mulders' powerful sub-frequency shift. The three conspire to make a sound as monolithic and frantic as it is emotive.

"For this record, I had to dig deep into hidden and guarded emotions," Stefanie reveals. "It's not so easy to sing about myself, so I used the third person. And it's also not easy to drum a blast-beat over a melodic vocal to capture some exact feelings. 'All Along' is for a loved one, a band, the friends around me that are actually able to stand me."

Having gigged rigorously across Belgium, in April 2016 Brutus decamped to Vancouver, BC to record Burst. "We sent an email to Jesse Gander (Japandroids, White Lung), his reply with sushi emoji's was an instant ticket," Stefanie explains. "The time in Canada, living together and working in the studio was refreshing, inspiring, healing and confronting at the same time." Burst is the perfect title for this debut album, then. "It's the perfect title for me," Stefanie adds. "It's a ball of emotions, ready to burst with frustration and anger. But also with tons of energy, love... everything at once." Trouble comes in threes... and so does Brutus.

Burst will be available digitally worldwide on May 12th, 2017 and physically on June 30th, 2017 via Sargent House. Pre-orders for LP/CD via HelloMerch and download via iTunes.
