Watch NYC trio Blackout's insane sci-fi BBQ voodoo psychedelic video via Metal Injection

Click image above to watch video

"In a sea of newer-school heavy riffing, Blackout are managing to concoct a sound across the span of The Horse that stands them out. The songwriting and execution... feels like a landmark for them." -- The Obelisk

"If heavy distortion and filthy psych rock are up your alley, stick The Horse in your summer soundtrack rotation." -- Noisey

NYC trio Blackout premiere the first video from their newly released album The Horse today via Metal Injection. The utterly insane video for "Graves" is like a bad acid trip sci-fi BBQ voodoo party gone totally right, available to watch and share HERE. (And, YouTube.)

Noisey shared the full album stream last week ahead of release. Listen to The Horse album HERE. (Soundcloud).

Ask any New Yorker what makes them special and they’ll all tell you something different. But there’s something very particular about a city so condensed with a vast range of humanity all facing myriad daily challenges that gives its rock music a brash, direct aggression unlike other places. Case in point, NYC trio Blackout’s take on doom and stoner rock is filled with a gritty, mechanistic heft unlike bands of their ilk from anywhere else.

Subsumed within the greasy grooves of The Horse there are echoes of NYC heavy legends like Helmet, Cro-Mags, Judge, Prong and others -- not as intentional homage, but rather a vibe that permeates and inadvertently gives its bands a unique power that few can match.

After a brief hiatus between the March 2015 release of their self-titled sophomore album on RidingEasy Records, Blackout has regrouped and (ahem) gotten back on The Horse for an 8-song blast of riffs that does not fuck around.

On one fateful day in July 2016, with a handful of mushrooms and a bottle of tequila, vocalist/guitarist Christian Gordy set out to write an entire new Blackout record. Following the departure of original drummer Taryn Waldman earlier that year, the band’s fate was uncertain. But, Gordy’s writing forray resulted in a wellspring of inspiration and by happenstance he contacted drummer Adam Taylor who had just parted with his band Ghost Punch. Within two months of banging out riffs with bassist Justin Sherrell, Blackout was back in action.

The Horse was recorded over 4 days in September 2016 at Spaceman Sound in Brooklyn’s Greenpoint neighborhood, which the band describes as “a whirlwind session laced with loads of buds, Petey’s burgers and lipstick.”

Or, described by blackout themselves: “What you have before you now is a messy plate of meat, slathered in weird sauces. A haunted steak from from Centaurus A to sink your dirty fangs into. Sit back, crack a semi cold one, maybe get some snacks... and turn this motherfucker up to 8.”

Quin Galavis premieres several tracks from 'The Battery Line', followup to multi-Album-of-the-Year nominated 2xLP

"Much like Paul Westerberg, Galavis proves to have a penchant for writing songs that are are fast and at times heavy while still managing to be insanely catchy." -- Glide Magazine

"Less than 10 months after releasing his melancholic magnum opus, My Life in Steel and Concrete, emotionally intense songwriter Quin Galavis returns with The Battery Line, his personal pop apex. Don’t worry, it’s not as uplifting as it sounds." -- Austin Chronicle

Austin, TX songwriter Quin Galavis premiered additional new tracks this week from The Battery Line, the more refined yet lyrically weighty followup to last year's critically-praised double album. Spread out across a variety of press outlets, songs from The Battery Line have propagated one by one. The full album is released today via Super Secret Records and is available to hear and share in full on Soundcloud and Spotify

Austin Chronicle interviews Galavis on the new, catchier sounding album and its dark portents, alongside song premiere "Faces In The Crowd" HERE. Culture Creature unveiled the "reprieve from the intensity" of "No Return" HERE. Austin Town Hall calls him "one of Austin's most valued songwriters" with their share of "Garden Wall" HERE. Aesthetic Magazine launched dark ballad "We Are Good Here" HERE. Punk Rock Theory dropped "Bleed With Me" HERE, which Vandala Magazine described as "a psychedelic tear-jerking folk rock adventure" HERE

Glide Magazine describes album track "Any Head" as the work of a long-lost son of Paul Westerberg. Hear & share the powerful track HERE. (Soundcloud). The Spill Magazine shares the powerful album track "Guiding Light" HERE. (Soundcloud).

Quin Galavis has built a strong reputation for producing a variety of high quality music via acclaimed
bands including Nazi Gold and The Dead Space, and through his previous solo work. Unpredictable and experimental from record to record and from live performance to live performance, Quin Galavis continues to challenge himself and his audience to reconsider and subvert what it means to be an artist and musician.

The Battery Line was recorded with Aaron Blount (Knife in the Water) & John Michael Landon at Austin's Estuary Recording Facility. The album's powerful, expressive and hook-laden songs show that Galavis isn't beholden to the dark avant rock of his previous album. Catchy riffs and quasi power pop moments give the album a lifting spirit. Ten songs of heart & guts, the new album comes out on 16 June 2017 via Super Secret Records.

His sophomore album, 2016's immersive, ambitious double-LP, My Life in Steel and Concrete, appeared on multiple end-of-year top ten lists and was spotlighted in an Austin Chronicle feature story. The record's soundscape is as varied and challenging as the themes it explores, and it features a host of Austin's diverse musical elite: Thor Harris (Swans and Shearwater), Sabrina Ellis (Sweet Spirit/A Giant Dog), Graham Low (A Giant Dog), and Ian Rundell (Ghetto Ghouls), to name a few.

PINK FROST stream forthcoming album in full, Chicago heavy/shoegaze band's first new LP in 4 years

"An increasingly commanding quartet that embraces the power of guitar drone, tribal drum and the deep, shoegaze-era swoon." -- Chicago Tribune

"Off-kilter, yearning rock music that strives for a populism that's considered a bit declassé by most of their peers and, as such, badly missed." -- Pitchfork

Chicago's critically-praised quartet Pink Frost are streaming their first proper full length album in 4 years in its entirety today via New Noise Magazine. Hear and share full album HERE. (Soundcloud)

Clrvynt recently shared lead single "Bare Roots" HERE. Bandcamp Daily featured "Bare Roots" in their New & Notable section, calling it a "serrated, terrifying take on psych-rock." Impose Magazine followed with the dreamy psychedelic ballad "Avian" HERE. Echoes & Dust hosted the title track HERE. And, UK zine AltDialogue premiered "Seek and Recover" HERE

So much has changed so quickly in recent times, it's hard to even really recognize who we were just a short time ago. Are we ever who we thought we were?

New Minds, the first proper full length in nearly 4 years from Chicago quartet Pink Frost, addresses a collective sense of abrupt changes. "There is a sentimentality or a sense of loss that permeates most of the songs," says vocalist/guitarist Adam Lukas. "Whether that is the loss of truth, the ones you love, your place in the universe, or general sense of meaning in changing landscapes."

And while Pink Frost, too, has transformed in that time, New Minds proves to be an immense growth in dynamics, introspection and the band's own sense of identity. The album showcases a diverging sound in which the straight ahead rock songs are heavier and darker, while the blissed out space jams and melodies are more delicate and personal.

Vocalist/guitarist Adam Lukas and guitarist Paige Sandlin with new bassist Alex Shumard and drummer Jesse Hozeny deftly steer these lyrical themes and sonic trajectories with a fitting starkness as well as melodic contrast. The album's deep grey on black cover art nicely illustrates the mood captured within.

Album opener and title track "New Minds" wastes no time kicking things off full throttle, setting the album's tone with driving downstroke guitars and fast-clip syncopated drums as Lukas sings, "there's no wrong/ There's no right/ We hide in the light." Surprisingly, the song about living in a post-truth world was written and recorded before the recent election cycle. Its vision of a looming dystopia just happened to arrive a bit early. "Bare Roots" hits like a long lost outtake from Black Sabbath's Sabotage with a brick wall solid riff and Lukas' wailing vocals leading the charge until the song suddenly subsides into a lulling respite of lightly plucked strings and whispered vocals. But the break is short-lived, as the song again erupts into an even more formidable obelisk of heavy riffs layered with a soaring guitar melody that continually builds upon itself until the song collapses under its own heft. "Avian" takes a turn to more psychedelic balladry of Arthur Lee & Love, showcasing the album's further explorations into more subdued melodies. The simmering anthem "Burn Before Dawn" leads into the subtle album closer "We No Time" -- a slight reference to the song "We Know Time" from the band's first album, but even more so an adaptation of a song that precedes the band, originally recorded by Lukas on 4-track cassette using drum loops and sounds that were painstakingly reconstructed in the studio. While the song was being mixed, riots were breaking out in the streets during the inauguration of Donald Trump, which can be heard in news snippets fading in toward the end of the song.

New Minds was recorded in Chicago at Steve Albini's legendary Electrical Audio studio with engineer Gregoire Yeche, just as the band has done on Sundowning (2013) and the Traitors EP (2014). "Electrical Audio is almost like another member of the band at this point," Lukas says. "There is a purity to their method that captures the essence of the performance and preserves it in this magical 3-D way."

Sundowning received an onslaught of praise from such revered outlets as Pitchfork, SPIN, Noisey, Magnet Magazine and Chicago Reader, as well as song placements in a feature film ("The Lookalike"), TV's The Vampire Diaries, CSI: Miami and more. In December 2015, Pink Frost released a completely remixed, rethought and remastered version of their debut album Gargoyle Days, originally issued under the band's former name Apteka

New Minds will be available on LP, CD and download on June 16th, 2017 via Under Road Records. Pre-orders are available at iTunes and Bandcamp

Suspirians album streaming ahead of release, Austin hypnotic trio w/ mbrs Roky Erickson band & ST37 issue album Friday

"40 minutes' worth of feedback-drenched, brain-melting rock that straddles the line between the Stooges' impatient punk and Roky Erickson's heady jams." -- Clrvynt

"A roaring expedition of spellbinding psych punk." -- Austin Chronicle

Austin trio Suspirians are streaming their forthcoming sophomore album in full today ahead of release via Echoes & Dust. Hear and share Ti Bon Ange in full HERE. (Direct Soundcloud.)

She Shreds Magazine recently shared "Fortune Spider" in an in-depth interview with vocalist/guitarist Marisa Pool HEREAustin Chronicle launched the album's epic centerpiece "Black Holes", also with an interview HERETiny Mix Tapes shared the entrancing "Moonwave" HERE. And, Clrvynt previously hosted "Nocturne" HERE.

Rock music, when done right, will always take us into a netherworld that we never knew existed, but we always somehow felt was within ourselves. The cosmos of inescapable rhythm, in-your-face melody and words, all speak simple truths that perhaps we couldn't speak for ourselves. Austin, TX trio Suspirians summons that netherworld with their sophomore album Ti Bon Ange

The album title is taken from a Haitian voodoo term that translates literally to "little good angel" - the part of one's soul that holds one's individuality and personal qualities, which leaves the body when sleeping so you can dream. It's a title quite befitting of the experience listening to Ti Bon Ange, where listeners become immersed in a sound, not just casually attending to it.

From the first notes of the album, throughout its 7-song, 40 minute duration it's clear that Suspirians aim to deconstruct rock in a way that's both psychedelic and mysterious as much as it's direct, infectious and powerful. Guitarist/vocalist Marissa Pool, bassist/keyboardist Stephanie Demopulos and drummer Lisa Cameron craft songs that shape-shift from part to part rather than follow traditional verse-chorus-verse structure. It's a wall of guitars and subtle synth layers, vocals drenched in reverb and on the brink of feedback, powerful and open drumming that allows the songs to flow like molten lava without ever sounding lethargic. Points of reference bridge a wide array of psychedelic, punk and experimental sounds: Pylon, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sonic Youth, The Stooges first album, Frightwig, early Butthole Surfers, Roky Erickson & The Aliens, late 70s British post-punk and more.

"We would end up getting lost in the songs together in a sort of epic fever dream," Pool says. "We did not overthink or over control anything on this record. It was all about going with the flow and following our instincts." Suspirians' self-titled debut album - with original drummer Anna Lamphear - was comparatively a more straightforward and garagey affair. Pool and Demopulos began experimenting with their sound soon after and with the addition of Cameron, they collectively found the aesthetic they were after. Cameron's extensive musical history - having played with the legendary Roky Erickson, as well as celebrated Austin psych band ST37 and other improv/noise projects - helped the band expand its vision.

Ti Bon Ange was recorded at 5th Street Studios with engineer Evan Kleinecke, while the band was still navigating their way through the nascent songs. "We had some raw and powerful basic tracks to bounce off of and the rest of the time was just having fun playing really loud and experimenting," Pool says. The results are equally as deliberate and completely free as groundbreaking rock'n'roll should be.

Ti Bon Ange will be available on LP, CD and download on June 9th via Super Secret Records
