Quin Galavis premieres first track from upcoming double LP feat. members of SWANS, Dead Space, A Giant Dog

Austin, TX songwriter Quin Galavis premieres the first track from his forthcoming epic double album, My Life in Steel and Concrete today via Brooklyn Vegan. The confessional song "Glorious Man" is available to hear and share HERE. (Direct Soundcloud HERE.)

Quin Galavis has built a strong reputation for producing a variety of high quality music via acclaimed bands including Nazi Gold and The Dead Space, and through his previous solo work. This double LP is the culmination of not only his music career, but his entire life to this point at 31 years of age. It tells a story, which closes a chapter on Quin’s career and life, and yet lays the groundwork for future musical journeys that are only hinted at here.

Those that have seen his recent live performances of some of the songs on this release, or have heard this recording, usually make remarks that include words like “emotional”, “dark”, “wonderful”, “beautiful”, and “scary.” It’s not just a rock and roll record, although there are plenty of rock songs here. It’s not an opera, although certainly the story and the songs will evoke an emotional reaction similar to that of a well-loved opera. Quin himself describes the recording as “therapeutic”, and he
promises to continue this journey in his future work.

For this recording Quin obtained the services of numerous well respected musicians including Thor Harris (Swans, Shearwater, Nazi Gold, Thor and Friends, etc.) and Sabrina Ellis (A Giant Dog), and too many others to name here. It was engineered by Ian Rundell (multiple albums by Spray Paint among others), and it was mastered by Seth Gibbs.

Quin has already begun recording another album in July 2016, and he just launched a new website at quingalavis.com which is a great resource for fans to not only keep up with upcoming shows and recording plans, but also Quin’s life as it unfolds, because he plans to update his personal blog on the site regularly.

Austin label Super Secret Records says of the release, "We hope you enjoy the first step in this new journey Quin has undertaken; we’re confident you will want to follow his story closely as it unfolds in this recording and into the future. We were so enthralled by his story and this recording that we’ve entered into a lifetime contract with Quin; which is really just a handshake and a promise to continue to release his records as long as he wants."

My Life in Steel and Concrete will be available on 2xLP, CD and download on August 26th via Super Secret Records

Salem's Pot streaming entire forthcoming album at CvltNation, lists 'Best Horror Film Sequels of All Time' at Consequence of Sound

"The record is their catchiest and most hallucinatory yet. It’s rock and roll that’s slightly off, content to drift in its own left-field weirdness like the bizarre flicks that inspired it." -- Consequence of Sound

"This is, by all accounts, my favorite record of the year so far. This record has the potential to be huge, and it should be." -- Outlaws of The Sun

Mysterious Swedish band Salem's Pot are streaming their entire forthcoming album early this week starting today via CvltNation and overseas via The Quietus. The critically praised full length is available to hear and share at CvltNation HERE and The Quietus HERE. (Direct Soundcloud HERE.)

The horror lore loving Salem's Pot also have shared their entertaining list of the "Best Horror Film Sequels of All Time" with Consequence of Sound. Watch portions of their picks HERE

"Don't try to fight it," the band's motto implores, "Salem's Pot has come to destroy your mind." It's the same kind of winking tease employed by low budget horror films of the 70s-80s that essentially dared audiences to experience what they knew they wanted, but couldn't possibly expect.

Likewise, the new album by mysterious Swedish quintet Salem's Pot delivers truly gritty and captivating heavy rock in high contrast technicolor: a sonic equivalent of The Last House On The Left, El Topo and Blood Feast. Similar to the way such films made up for their lack of flashy, expensive effects with dim lighting and implied violence, a hallucinogenic sense of true evil lurks in the dark corners of Salem's Pot's sound. Lest we forget, the band's name itself is a pun on Stephen King's stark, modernized vampire masterpiece.

Where previous Salem's Pot releases honed doom riffs to perfection, Pronounce This! sees the band expanding its horizons to the far corners of imagination. It's a hazy fever dream of dark, thrilling excess. It's equal parts of The Cramps' Psychedelic Jungle, Pentagram's Relentless, Roky Erickson's The Evil One and The Stooges Raw Power, as much heirs to Deep Purple as Dead Moon... metal, garage punk, acid rock and a belladonna trip gone wrong. It's not heavy metal, this is a mutant monster that cannot be tamed.

And, perhaps as a continuation of the band's fascination with sinful lore, Salem's Pot never identifies its band members individually -- they're all completely anonymous without so much as a stagename. One of the biggest upgrades since the band's 2014 RidingEasy album ...Lurar ut dig pa prarien is the addition of second guitar, with the previous drummer giving up the throne for the strap and a new unnamed mystery man pounding the kit. Now, the band is freed to expand beyond the riff and get truly freaky. And with each new release, the vocals are way more snarling punk than the doom histrionics of their peers.

Album opener "Tranny Takes a Trip" kicks off with a humming modular synth drone and twin guitar throb lulling beneath a cascading haze of gurgling keyboard-through-delay-loop sounds before settling in to a stomping anthem replete with NWOBHM harmonized guitar leads. The album's tone clearly set for the shadiest recesses of our minds, "Just For Kicks" swaggers in on a phaser-drenched single note guitar line that sets up a demented blues as the tuneful, yelping vocals expound on a penchant for chemical excess with direct honesty. A shortened edit of "The Vampire Strikes Back" was released as a single in late 2015, shorn down to the hook-laden rocker at the seven-and-a-half minute song's core. But here you get the track's full, sprawling glory as it staggers through a hazy, murderous leitmotif with noir-ish deliberation. "Coal Mind" is the album centerpiece at nearly 13 minutes of Hawkwind on a bad trip, drifting from space rock with an exemplary "bit of finger" to throbbing, hypnotic pulse that eventually ruptures with monolithic drop-tuned wall of guitar. "So Gone, So Dead" is a moment of respite giving nod to Gram Parsons' lysergic western swing with funereal weight. "Desire" closes the album with epic grandeur reminiscent of Roky Erickson's bleak murder ballad "Burn The Flames" supercharged with squealing and writhing guitars and thunderous drums.

"They used to wake up on your couch, not wanting to wake up," the band's brief manifesto explains. "Desperately clinging to sin, degradation, murder and substance abuse. With nothing left inside they made an attempt to tell someone about it, and the dead chuckled merrily: 'You're not alone.'"

Pronounce This! will be available on LP, CD and download on July 22nd via RidingEasy Records. Pre-orders for physical at RidingEasyRecs.com and download at salemspot.bandcamp.com

Slow Season stream full album ahead of release via Consequence of Sound

"A studio recording worthy of their '-or die trying' mentality." -- Consequence of Sound

Central California quartet Slow Season are streaming their entire forthcoming album, Westing ahead of release starting today via Consequence of Sound. The album that many are considering the band's breakout work is available to hear and share HERE. (Direct Soundcloud HERE.)

Slow Season recently wrapped up an extensive North American tour in June and are back on the road this week on the west coast. Additional tour dates for late summer will be announced soon. Please see current dates below.

Metal Injection recently launched the banging single "Damascus" HERE. The Obelisk revealed album track "Miranda" HERE. Prior to that, Consequence of Sound premiered the first single "Y'Wanna" HERE

Contrary to the band's name, downtime is a rarity for Slow Season. Sandwiched between summer 2015's extensive tour with their RidingEasy labelmates Mondo Drag and Electric Citizen, plus several short west coast jaunts, the hard-working quartet also found time to hammer out its most powerful and ambitious album yet. Written, engineered, produced and mixed themselves on their own equipment, entirely on analog tape, Westing is a hard-hitting and powerful reminder of how at one time a rock 'n' roll band could be a transcendent experience.

While Slow Season's sound continues to effortlessly nod to the great bands of the 60s-70s, Westing is truly the sound of a band coming into their own. The songwriting is tight, howling and hypnotic. The sound is classic, yet refreshingly new.

"It's a different album," says drummer and primary recording engineer Cody Tarbell. "But we never have wanted to find a particular sound or any one thing and be attached to it permanently. A big part of our records is experimenting." The Visalia, CA band -- Daniel Rice (vocals, guitar), David Kent (guitar), Hayden Doyel (bass), and Cody Tarbell (drums) --  has recorded all of their albums on reel-to-reel at Tarbell's home studio in a cornfield. This affords them the time to experiment getting sounds, while maintaining focus on the most important notion that performance is key. As with previous albums, recording was pretty immediate, tracked between January 15th and the beginning of February 2016 to 16-track tape and mixed to 2-track tape.

Equally as ambitious as the band's self-sufficient production is the sprawling lyrical theme to the album.  Thematically picking up where the Slow Season's previous full length Mountains left off, Westing tackles some heady issues.

"Westing follows a loose narrative about our nation's loss of innocence as it explores its frontiers," vocalist Daniel Rice explains. "Re-contextualized in a story about an unnamed protagonist faced with choosing between different ideological allegiances and his own social identity." From song to song, the album follows what Rice explains as, "the unholy trinity of greed+power+violence, the injustice wrought from this, persisting in willful ignorance, and reaping what is sown." A deep conceptual arc, for sure, and one that adds further weight to the Slow Season's intensity.

Album opener "Y'Wanna" erupts from the speakers as if the band couldn't even wait for the tape to start recording. it's a full-throttle rocker reminiscent of Zep's "Immigrant Song" with sly reference to "Four Sticks", all groove and pummel. "Flag" keeps things rolling along with its bouncing, stop-n-go guitar riff. The 6/8-time blues sway of "The Jackal" echoes early Sabbath malefic boogie, while "Saurekonig" is a cavernous and volcanic mass driven by huge drums, ringing slide guitar and ominous drone. "Damascus" is a rollicking anthem driven by Tarbell's syncopated hi-hat/snare interplay and Rice's explosive wail proving just how much of a dynamic powerhouse Slow Season has become. Throughout, Westing is a smart and snarling rocker that sounds like rock 'n' roll records should: massive, infectious and inviting repeat listens.

Westing will be available on LP, CD and download via RidingEasy Records on July 15th, 2016. Pre-orders include a free immediate download of the first two singles and are available HERE

BORIS streaming entire Forbidden Songs album from 10th anniversary Pink (Deluxe Edition) reissue, U.S. tour 'Boris performing Pink' starts 7/22

Japanese trio Boris are streaming the entire Forbidden Songs album of unreleased tracks from the 10th anniversary Pink (Deluxe Edition) reissue today for the next 24 hours. The 9-track collection is available to hear and share via Soundcloud

NPR previously premiered "SOFUN" HERE. Pitchfork announced the release with "Are You Ready?" HERE

Boris will launch a full North American headlining tour later this month in which they will perform Pink in its entirety. The band's new Sargent House labelmates Earth will play all dates except two in Canada. Please see complete dates below.

Pink, the landmark 2006 album by Boris, which earned widespread critical praise -- including Pitchfork's Top 10 Albums of 2006 -- will be reissued in an expanded edition this week to commemorate the album's 10th anniversary.

The deluxe 3xLP box set and 2xCD features an entire album of previously unreleased tracks recorded during the Pink album sessions in 2004-2005. The bonus Forbidden Songs collects 9 tracks of the same hyperactive, accessible and aggressive caliber of the original album, available here for the first time, mixed (with additional editing and arrangement) in 2015 and mastered in January 2016. Like the original U.S. vinyl release, the Pink (Deluxe Edition) LP set has three longer edits of songs that were truncated on the original CD issue ("Farewell", "Pseudo-Bread" and "My Machine"). Otherwise, both the LP and CD versions have the same audio as the 2006 release. And, Pink (Deluxe Edition) also features the artwork of the original Japanese release, made by the band members themselves.

In 2006, Pink was Boris' 10th album and a major breakthrough that earned new fans outside of the underground metal community -- the track "Farewell" was even featured in Jim Jarmusch's classic film The Limits of Control. The album landed on countless "best of the year" lists from underground metal sites to mainstream rock magazines. And the praise was certainly well deserved for its more accessible sound and explorations into shoegaze and ambient structures alongside brutal noise, searing psychedelia and apocalyptic doom.

Pink succeeds at what most bands cannot do: swiftly changing styles from song to song, while always sounding distinctly like themselves. The seamless, explosive set of fan favorites from the classic longtime lineup of drummer/vocalist Atsuo, guitarist/vocalist Wata and bassist/guitarist/vocalist Takeshi still sounds as mindblowing as it did a decade ago. And, Forbidden Songs continues with the same unbridled creativity and ferocity. These songs aren't outliers, they're rather more like the director's cut version of the original album.

Boris is now in their 24th year as a band -- 20 years in the classic trio lineup -- and showing no signs of slowing down. They have always demolished expectations of what a band can do musically and aesthetically. And in looking back with Pink (Deluxe Edition), the band's trajectory as experimenters and innovators over subsequent releases becomes even clearer.

Pink (Deluxe Edition) will be available everywhere (excluding Japan) on July 8th on 3xLP box set, 2xCD and download via Sargent House. iTunes pre-orders include a free immediate download of "Are You Ready?" HERE, 3xLP box set and 2xCD are available for pre-order via Hello Merch

Halycine (feat. ex-Blue & Gold singer/guitarist Chloe Raynes) premiere first single from upcoming debut in interview with Impose Magazine

“‘Circles’ has that deep rock vibe you’ve been craving when scrolling through every other pop station, and we’re big, big fans.” — Impose Magazine

NYC band Halycine premieres the first single from their forthcoming debut today in an introductory interview via Impose Magazine. The track "Circles" is available to hear & share HERE. (Direct Soundcloud.)

Halycine, the moniker for the solo project of singer/guitarist Chloe Raynes, is a fresh new voice in indie rock. Her debut EP, In The Salt, is a collection of 5 songs that she wrote and produced, and 3 videos that she directed. It will be released late summer 2016.

Chloe previously co-fronted NYC’s rock outfit Blue & Gold before embarking on the new project that would become Halycine. In The Salt is a luscious blend of reverberating guitars and spacious vocals. It’s a sonically imaginative and and lyrically vivid collection of deeply affecting songs. The EP was tracked and mixed at The End in Greenpoint, Brooklyn with GG Gonzalez on drums and Derek Cabrera on bass.

After hearing Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" for the first time at 10-years-old, she decided that she had no choice but to pick up the guitar and begin shredding. Her life was forever changed, and she's been playing and writing songs ever since.

Chloe studied music composition at the arctic campus of Bates College in Maine. She managed to get through the long winters with a soundtrack of Liz Phair, Sleater-Kinney, and Sublime. She moved to NYC shortly after graduation, absorbing the sights and sounds that would eventually shape her musical sensibilities. Other musical influences include Dum Dum Girls, St. Vincent, and Jenny Lewis.

In The Salt will be available for download in August of 2016.
