Crypts stream entire new album via Consequence of Sound, announce fall dates with Chelsea Wolfe, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez Group

Click image above to watch video (YouTube) (Vimeo)

Seattle dark electronic trio Crypts have made their entire forthcoming album available for streaming all this week courtesy of Consequence of Sound. Check out their self-titled Sargent House debut streaming HERE

Crypts also recently premiered the song, "Completely F**ked" via SPIN.com and it is available to stream HERE. Crypts take to the road this fall, first with Chelsea Wolfe in September, then with Omar Rodriguez-Lopez's new group featuring Teri Gender Bender of Le Butcherettes on vocals in October. Please see complete dates below.

The eerie, mind-warping video for album track "Fancy" is available to watch HERE (check out MP3 HERE). The clip was directed and edited by Crypts member and visual artist Nick Bartoletti.

The long, slow demise of rock music has endured endless death throes, but the self-titled debut album by Crypts seems to clearly seal its fate while heralding the arrival of something far more vibrant and downright dangerous. The trio blends thick, hazy drone and synth noise with chopped-up hip hop rhythms, forsaking guitars in favor of more unique and sinister sounds.

Vocalist Steve Snere, former frontman of chaotic punk revisionists These Arms Are Snakes, brings a snarling urgency to the songs, while programmer Bryce Brown blasts out an aural assault of horror show noise, subsonic bass and skittering rhythms. Meanwhile, visual artist Nick Bartoletti creates a total environment of light and video projections for the band's live experience as well as its decidedly nihilistic aesthetic. It's an all-out attack on the senses that comes across as fresh and invigorating as the early days of punk.

"I needed a change of pace, to take myself out of the guitar-based rock world," says vocalist Steve Snere. "And the three of us wanted to experiment to find a sound that we wanted to hear." The result is the intense, occasionally bleak, yet endlessly enthralling debut album. Comparisons range from Wolf Eyes meets Christian Death to Skinny Puppy playing Dizzee Rascal. But these touch points seem to only scratch the surface of the snarling beast within Crypts

The album was engineered with Erik Blood (Shabazz Palaces), building upon basics recorded by Brown on Pro-Tools to which the band added live instruments. Most of the sounds were generated on home-built and modified equipment. Live, the band uses a homemade sound-reactive video device for its startling visuals. "We play everything live, there's no loops," Brown explains. "It's not a lot of button-pushing. Nick runs visuals live, while also playing synths. It's more like a rock band in a live setting."

Crypts opens with the fittingly titled "Completely Fucked", awash with slithering John Carpenter soundtrack synths oozing over galloping drum machine beats and synthetic handclaps. Nearly buried beneath the din, Snere moans and wails, building to a screaming crescendo like a maniac. And, with a choked growl, the song ends just barely over 2-minutes, launching into the hip-hop beat and almost bubbly-sounding keyboards of "Daft." Elsewhere, the trio lean into The Cure's Pornography-era gloom-pop ("Territories") and dark, anthemic hooks ("Bloods"). Throughout, it's a vastly energetic, albeit downright depraved sounding album thanks to Snere's effectively dramatic and versatile vocals and the band's innovative collision of musical aesthetics.

Crypts will be released on LP, CD and download via Sargent House on September 4th, 2012.

Bad Seeds, Daniel Lanois collaborator Bambi Lee Savage announces new album produced by Mick Harvey

Bambi Lee Savage announces the forthcoming release of her third solo album, Darkness Overshadowed. The album is produced by Mick Harvey (Bad Seeds, PJ Harvey), who also plays most of the backing instrumentation. Check out the sultry Twin Peaks-esque pop of the track, "Oh Loneliness" available to stream HERE and download HERE

As with most things in existence, it's the secrets in music that speak truest. The fact that Bambi Lee Savage has remained a secret for so long is testament to that. Over the past 25 years, the world-wandering singer-songwriter has worked with Daniel Lanois as well as members of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds and Einstürzende Neubauten. She counts among her patrons Billy Bob Thornton and Bono. Her timeless ballads and haunted anthems are stark, lush, elemental, and ethereal as smoke. And like smoke, they conceal -- even as they signal deeper mysteries well worth the effort of unveiling.

Savage began life in Florida, but following the death of her father -- a stunt pilot tragically killed during the filming of the Pearl Harbor drama Tora! Tora! Tora! -- her family relocated to Colorado. In Denver, she played in various punk bands, including the Pagan Cowboys, as the '80s raged around her. It was upon moving to England in 1985 that her secrets began to weave themselves. After fronting the post-punk outfit Horseland, she moved to Berlin, drawn by the industrial allure of Einstürzende Neubauten. In Berlin she began working as an assistant engineer at the famous Hansa Tonstudio. There she wound up scoring credits on two definitive albums of the era: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' The Good Son and U2's Achtung Baby.

Behind the scenes, though, Savage was working on her own songs. In 1992, Bono funded a recording session in Berlin that included the Bad Seeds' Mick Harvey and Hugo Race as backing musicians. Shadowy and steeped in a shivering mystique, the four-song recording went unreleased, although Harvey would later cover one of Savage's other songs, "Demon Alcohol," on his 2005 album One Man's Treasure. From there, Savage appeared on the German music documentary Lost in Music: Out of Country, playing two of her songs with Neubauten's Alex Hacke.

By then, Savage's music had taken a turn toward the dark end of the Americana street, driven partly by a homesickness for her native country. Back in the States, she captured another handful of songs with Daniel Lanois, with whom she'd worked on Achtung Baby. One of those songs, the ghostly folk threnody "Darlin'," caught the ear of Billy Bob Thornton, who used the song on the soundtrack to his breakthrough film Sling Blade.

In 2003, she released her first album, Matter of Time, a collection of the various sessions she'd done to date. Although a patchwork, the disc is stunning in its quiet force and sublimated passion. In it, Savage explores illicit substances, spirituality, tenderness, and terror, always with a thrilling tension between myth and confession. In the years that followed, she toured Australia (accompanied by Harvey on some dates) and played a triumphant set as the handpicked opener for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds in Denver. She moved to Los Angeles soon after and, with Josh Klinghoffer on guitar (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dot Hacker) she completed work on the daring GJ and the PimpKillers, a conceptual and synthetically textured album that delved into the underworld of sex trafficking. As always, though, Savage's rich, hypnotic, full-blooded voice lends both humanity and otherworldliness to her songs.

Savage's new album, Darkness Overshadowed, is both a culmination of all she's done before-and a brave move beyond it. From the guttural punk undertow of "Easy Way" to the atmospheric dread of "Elsinore" to the whispery twang of "Waiting," the disc is based around hopes, fears, memories, regrets, and scraps of confessions written on Berlin bar napkins. Produced by Mick Harvey, who also provides most of the backing instrumentation, it's by far the most vivid and chilling of Savage's work to date. Above all, though, Darkness Overshadowed reads as a secret history of the pre-apocalypse, a gnostic gospel decrypted and given human form. Or in Savage's case, something slightly beyond human.

Darkness Overshadowed will be available on CD and download on November 13th, 2012.

Australian label OSCL announces 3 new releases out simultaneously in U.S. this fall

Australian management/label OSCL announces U.S. domestic releases from three of its flagship artists this fall. These include CD/LP/Downloads from Melbourne dark synth & theremin heavyweights  The Night Terrors, leaden pop riff masters Gatherer and haunting minimalist duo A Dead Forest Index

Listen to and share sample tracks from all three artists:

The Night Terrors "Monster" (MP3 HERE)
Gatherer "Regular Frontier" (MP3 HERE)
A Dead Forest Index "Distance" (MP3 HERE) (VIDEO)

Melbourne's Night Terrors feature vintage horror synths, breakneck rhythms and the haunting theremin melodies of Miles Brown (student of Russian theremin queen Lydia Kavina). They offer a mind-melting mix of dark soundtrack magic, thunderous dreamscapes and other-worldly electronica. Their Monsters/Lasers For Eyes 12"/CD/Download is out September 18th on OSCL Records. Check out VICE Magazine's EP premiere HERE

Gatherer has drawn on a combination of life experiences and influences, cohesively blending the pop sensibilities of Nine Inch Nails, the genuine melodic rock of Cave-Inand a hint of Torche inspired heaviness with the vocal rhythms and melody of Queen. Their album So Be It hits the states on the Red Tape Records imprint via OSCL on September 18th.

Melbourne based A Dead Forest Index are brothers Adam and Sam Sherry, forming a minimalist two piece. Drawing on elements centered around rhythmic pulls and washes of vocals, the guitar and percussion clatters in and around measured structures that can end abruptly, or drift into tapping decrescendos where the harmony finds a resolution. Their album Antique offers a fresh new sound which should please fans of a mixture of Scott Walker, Chelsea Wolfe, Einstürzende Neubauten, Bela Bartok or Dead Can Dance. Released on Denovali Records, in conjunction with OSCL

Crypts premiere new song from forthcoming debut via SPIN.com, announce fall dates with Chelsea Wolfe, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez Group

Boyfrndz launch "Hear Say" via Consequence of Sound, announce fall tour

Austin trio Boyfrndz premiere the first song from their forthcoming album today via Consequence of Sound. The soaring track, "Hear Say" is culled from All Day Pass their sophomore album out this fall. Stream/download song HERE

Following Texas dates with Fang Island, Adebisi Shank and Coheed and Cambria this week, Boyfrndz launch U.S. tour dates in September in support of the album's release. Complete dates to be announced soon, please see current schedule below.

Boyfrndz began in 2010, shortly after the collapse of We The Granada, a band in which guitarist/vocalist Scott Martin and bassist/vocalist Joseph Raines had cut their teeth. Martin's roommate and sought-after drummer/vocalist Aaron Perez (at the time already playing in three other bands) signed on and Boyfrndz quickly became a priority. The lineup expanded to a four piece with guitarist Kelvin Baron for their self-titled full length debut in 2011. The group enlisted Grammy award winning keyboardist Ikey Owens (The Mars Volta, Jack White) to co-produce and he also played keys on a couple of tracks. Boyfrndz pared down to a three piece following a summer tour in 2011 and soon thereafter set about writing new songs resulting in the And So It Goes... 5-track EP in February 2012 and the band's expansive forthcoming album, All Day Pass.

Kicking off with the droning fade in of "Colts", All Day Pass begins with Martin's vocals mirroring his ringing guitar notes and Perez's thunderous toms and Raines' lithe bass playing drive the song's syncopated rhythm through multiple time signature shifts over the course of the tune's 4:11 duration. "On Point" takes a decidedly more sinister turn, with an ominous build up and rollicking turnaround vaguely reminiscent of the oceanic feel of Jane's Addiction's Nothing's Shocking. Elsewhere, passages touch upon the dreamy haze of Sonic Youth and entrancing melodies of Animal Collective wedded to the warped pop prowess of Tera Melos. Throughout, All Day Pass is a captivating hybrid of technical precision guiding a soaring and ethereal melodic haze.

All Day Pass was recorded live in a whirlwind three days at the Shelter studio in Austin with few overdubs. The resulting album captures the trio's ferocious energy and impressive precision. Engineer Chris Seyler (touring sound man for Dillinger Escape Plan) oversaw recording and mixing, with Dan Millice at Engine Room Audio in NYC mastering (Boyfrndz EP, Hella's Tripper, et al).

All Day Pass will be available as a self-release on CD and download on September 11th, 2012 and LP via Spora Records shortly thereafter.

Fang Island premiere first video from new album, U.S. headlining tour underway

"It's impossible to come away from Major without a big grin plastered from ear to ear." -- BBC Music

"An eye-popping, pop-punking, limb-flinging, brow-singeing celebration of the major chord and its many possibilities." -- SPIN

"As an album, if I had to give Major a rank, I would promote it to General." -- Vice

Brooklyn's beloved guitar-anthem optimists Fang Island premiered the first video from their sophomore album, Major over the weekend on cable network MTVu. Today, the band posts the clip, "Sisterly" online for all to see and share. Watch video HERE. Alternate Vimeo link HERE

Fang Island is currently in the midst of a summer headlining tour, with support on partially overlapping stretches from Irish genre-benders Adebisi Shank and The Mars Volta sibling heavy groove outfit Zechs Marquise. Fang Island will also play Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, TX in November (exact date TBA). Please see complete dates below.

SPIN.com recently premiered a new track from the album. The song, "Seek It Out" is available to stream HERE. (Alternate Soundcloud link HERE.) Pitchfork recently premiered MP3s for the tracks "Asunder" (HERE) and "Sisterly" (HERE)

Like the painstakingly chiseled marble of the album artwork, Major is hefty, solid, monolithic and regal. Whereas Fang Island described their celebrated 2010 self-titled Sargent House debut as, "everyone high-fiving everyone," Major is evermore confident, triumphant and brimming with infectious enthusiasm. Its warm harmonies are given proper berth with more expansive dynamics and focused pop song craft.

"One of our core ideas has always been that our songs would be all of your favorite parts of the song that other bands make you wait 8 minutes to get to," explains guitarist/vocalist Jason Bartell. "We wanted to be the band that's nothing but your favorite hooks back to back." Major shows Fang Island deftly achieving that aim.

Throughout, Major highlights the band's endeavor to elevate positivity as an art form. "It's kind of similar to writing songs about being sad," Bartell says. "It can come across as simplistic, or easy. Positive songs often run the risk of sounding shallow, but we feel there are a lot of shades and depths to positivity that can be explored." That exploration becomes clear from the first notes of Major

However, Georges sums up the album's bold steps best in this short sampling of the band's nearly 1,000 bullet point explanation of the album title:

"Some reasons we called the album Major
- Major key (the first song is minor though!)
- Valley girl colloquialism
- Because we are on an independent label
- Because the rank under Sargent (House) is major
- It sounds like a constellation
- Steely Dan's "Any Major Dude" was in rotation a lot during the sessions
- The record is packaged to look like stone because it's ROCK. I really wanted people to hold a piece of rock when they picked up the record."

Major was released everywhere on LP, CD and download via Sargent House on July 24th, 2012.

Russian Circles post 1st of 3-part live in-studio video series, launch North American and OZ/NZ headlining tour dates next week

Click image above to watch video

"Empros is one of the most viscerally exciting and completely entertaining albums I've heard in a long time. There is perfection in the air and the battle for album of the year just heated up again." 10/10 rating -- Iann Robinson, Crave Online

"It's not a stretch to say it's the band's best album yet." -- Rock-A-Rolla

Chicago trio Russian Circles release the first of a three part live in-studio video series today. The clip is for the song "309" from the band's recent album, Empros. The live sessions were engineered and mixed by Toshi Kasai (Melvins, Big Business) at Entourage Studios in North Hollywood. The video is the debut of a new live in-studio sessions series by Sargent House in conjunction with Terroreyes.tv. Watch VIDEO HERE (or, alternate Vimeo link).

Russian Circles also launch North American and Australian/New Zealand headlining dates beginning next week and running well into Fall 2012. The band will be supported by Sargent House family bands Chelsea Wolfe and Marriages in North America and Eagle Twin down under. Russian Circles drummer Dave Turncrantz will pull double-duty drumming for Marriages on all dates. Please see complete dates below (or, get full show details here.)

This continues Russian Circles' already lengthy treks in support of their critically praised new album Empros. SPIN Magazine recently featured a full album stream of Empros. The band also recently premiered an MP3 from the album via RollingStone.com. The song, "Mladek" is available to listen/download HERE.

Empros is Russian Circles' first full-length to be released worldwide exclusively via Sargent House, the band's longtime management company and record label that had previously released only the vinyl editions of its three prior albums. It was released worldwide on LP, CD and Download on October 25th, 2011.
